Parking on the a1

Is it safe? I normally stay in lay-bys but normally find one on a minor road…

Ive found a nice little spot on the ind est at redhouse nr doncaster, same estate as b and q, asda and next have got warehouses there loads of space reasonably quiet and well lit,no yellow lines up the far end

the A1 is a pretty ■■■■ long road
could you be a little more specific as that may allow others to answer your question

In my experience not anywhere near South Elmsall or Scotch Corner.

I’m about 3 miles north of sandy, but I’ve pulled my card now so looks like I’m staying here!

I see, approx. 500 miles to go and the A1 ends

Not been up there for a while now, but there are/were some skinny ones on the DC stretch near Catterick I saw some trucks parked in from time to time with the curtains drawn. Drivers must be nuts. The road is pretty much a motorway - nobody slows down after the A1(M) and it’s just as busy… would they feel safe parking in a motorway hard shoulder? I can’t see any difference. :open_mouth:

All those laybys are gone now the conversion to motorway has started. The southbound one just before Scotch Corner will be closing soon too so there’ll be nowhere to park along there between Newcastle and Ferrybridge as it’ll all be motorway.

If there is no physical separation between the layby and the carriageway then side lights must be left on at night

Left hand down!:

Plenty of places to park up along that route though…

Washington Services, Newton Aycliffe Jet/Subway/McD’s, Barton Park Services and not sure if the Quernhow or Leeming Bar truck stops are still open

The old layby’s down the A1 were pathetic, hardly big enough for a car.

He’s on about laybys not truck stops/services :unamused: . You could use that same argument anywhere.

depends on whether he values his curtains or not, and not forgetting the fuel. A lot of laybys on the A1 are notorious for the thief brigade and some have police trailers warning of crime, so in all honesty your better off in a truckstop, where they have a better class of thief and curtain slasher.

I try to park up with out a full tank for that very reason but if they want my load there welcome to it, although they might have a problem trying to offload 29t of wheat!

Yeah but they can tell the wheat from the chaff
