Parking, Fort William

Hello dears.

Have a dis-load in Fort William tomorrow, Tomna Faire rail depot.

Am heading from below Glasgay, so up the A82 via Lomond and Glencoe. Anywhere nice and scenic for the evening? Lay- by next to a loch will do, don’t need any facilities, am a proper Boy Scout with everything in the cab.

Thankly dankly.

Some beautiful scenery up that way. Once you come through Glencoe village and over the bridge, there are numerous laybys before Fort William next to Loch Ness. Failing that there’s a truck park next to Sainsburys in the town that’s well signposted although it’s not too big.

Its one of those routes where you really envy the lucky sods who get an excuse to go up there.

Last time I looked Loch Ness was a good bit from Fort Billy ,Loch Linnhe is a bit closer though.I dont get up that way very often sadly.

Or am i getting my lochs mixed up

Isnt there a low bridge somewhere near Glencoe or have i imagined that as well

Lol. You’re right alamcculloch. No idea why I had Loch Ness in my head. Must be an old age thing

No no, you’re right chaversdad. Just me being old and senile

There are two truck parks in Fort William. When you drive through the town to the rail depot you’ll come up to a roundabout where you MUST turn right or go into McDonalds/Morrisons. You turn right and head for the depot. But if you want to park, take the Mcdonalds/Morrisons exit and within 20 meters you’ll see the truck park on your right, free and safe, 1 minute from the Loch.

Failing that you can find somewhere in Glencoe or even at the Green welly in Tyndrum (The southern end of Glencoe).

The only low bridge is if you were going beneath the Ballahullish bridge (Huge big green thing just past Glencoe, 30 minutes from FW) but the low bridge is 30 odd miles south of there in Oban, but your no where near that route.

You’ll notice a lot of signs warning you of a road closure on the A82. Ignore it, it’s further north than where your headed.

There was a low bridge at Crianlarich but I believe that has a new bypass. The side of the loch is tight in a few places, beware of sawdust trailers heading south on that route. A lot of folk use the Stirling to Crianlarich Road instead but that is a bit longer.

A few good places up around the Rannoch Moor to park. Not much between Glencoe and Fort William. As said parking is good in the town next to Morrisons although the McDonald’s fridge can often be a rattler.

Thanks for all the replies, chaps. As it turned out, I got dis-loaded so I’m on my way back to my beloved North Yorkshire.

FWIW, I’ve had the most superb day today. Ran up from Lockerbie this morning to a wind farm near Strathaven, then on to Fort William. It’s been a gorgeous day up here, and I cannot do justice to the scenery. The snow-capped mountains were beyond sublime, and to cap it all, just before Rannoch Moor was the biggest Red Deer stag I’ve ever had the privilege to see, about 50 feet from the road :open_mouth:

Absolutely brilliant day, and one of the reasons why I genuinely love my job :grimacing: :grimacing: .

It’s a beautiful journey! Reminds me of the time I once stopped in a layby near Fort William and saw a red squirrel. Never seen one in the wild before or since.

I saw a pine marten up near Oban once. Only one I’ve ever seen. Had sine mackerel fillers for tea and threw the skin out of the window when I was done. 5 mins later the marten came and took the skins. I didn’t dare move to get my camera.

I have parked behind McDonalds before now and had a shower but can’t remember where ,railway station perhaps ? Towel was supplied too ,or was it a lesuire centre ? will be there Thursday night ,can anyone remember?

You can get a shower in the Nevis centre, directly across the the road from the lorry park.

Thought so ,thank you .

Dunno about the towel, but yes you can get a shower at both. Leisure centre is probably easier/closer, £3 last time I was up that way.

If you park in the lorry park at morrisons go into the nevis centre for a shower but take your own stuff its £2.If you want a free towel and shower gel and shampoo go to the train station think its £3.50 in there. If you want a good chippy there is one on the main street near costa coffee and it was recommend to me by the locals.
