It’s been a while since I’ve posted, I lost touch when the website went through some changes.
Anyway, my son (37) thinks his heart/pulse is occasionally skipping a beat, and so, will be going to the doctor. My main question is, if it is, does the doctor also notify DVLA, and is it likely he will lose his vocational licence as a result? Palpitations seem to be quite common and I think you can still drive a car, but not likely drive on a vocational licence?
Any help would be welcome.

QUOTE… Doctors and other healthcare professionals should:
• advise the individual on the impact of their medical condition for
safe driving ability
• advise the individual on their legal requirement to notify the
DVLA of any relevant condition
• treat, manage and monitor the individual’s condition with
ongoing consideration of their fitness to drive
• notify the DVLA when fitness to drive requires notification but an
individual cannot or will not notify the DVLA themselves
Of course, this last obligation on professionals may pose a challenge to
issues of consent and the relationship between patient and healthcare
professional. The GMC and The College of Optometrists offer guidance
on this which is summarised below. (Note that the GMC is currently
considering updating this guidance.)
The medical name is Atrial Fibrillation.
The dvla got to know of all my conditions when my last medical form went in , they queried why I hadn’t informed them but I just acted daft & said I thought the doctor would inform you , didn’t know I had to , when I eventually got my lisense back there was also a letter saying I must in future inform them of any change in my health .ive recently informed them I’ve had a kidney removed & am now going on medication for high bp , back driving on section 88 I think it is until they’ve got confirmation from hospitals / consultants that what I’m telling them is correct , and whether I’m fit to continue to hold my lisense .
I’ve no knowledge of heart palpitations but have a heart murmur & iregular heart beat , high blood pressure , diabetic , bad circulation & 2 lots of cancer , when I rang them a year or so ago about why my lisense hadn’t returned after 4 months apx ( expecting them to say heart / diabetis ) he said we’re not bothered about those , we know about them , we’re intrested in the cancer ( prostrate only at time ) , what adaptations to lorry have you had , what medication are you on etc , not the one I expected .
I’m fully expecting not to get my lisense back this time , they wernt keen last time , but we will see .
As I say no knowledge of heart palpations but if I’ve got a lisense at present ( with all the lot above ) I’d of thought one thing you’ll be ok .
I’d though advise you not to do what I did , if it goes wrong ( accident ) I guess they’d throw the book at you , as I say I’ve just informed them of kidney loss / medication for bp .
Hope your lads ok , and like consultants say to me , the main thing is your still with us , I guess easy for me to agree at my age , but there right , being alive is more important than a hgv lisense .
Jeez Ady, that’s a hell of a list of medical conditions mate. I mean this with the greatest respect; the clock is ticking for us all, but it’s ticking really loudly with you mate. If there’s any way that you are in a position to knock this working malarkey on its head and retire please do it. Enjoy yourself while you can.
Not a single person has ever laid on their deathbed and said “I wish I’d got a few more hours in”.
Best of luck anyway.
I’ve spent a lot of the last year not working with kidney op ( 5 months off ) then readmitted with subsequent issues from operation & now a very large hernia from op that will need another op ,
It got me to the stage at home I dreaded the postman / phone calls , things going round in my head , it’s not me but things got to me , in the end wife said get yourself a little job to take you mind off things , I tried but got nowhere , no one would take the risk on someone with my list of health issues , who can blame them , not lorry driving
One of my old bosses rang as he often does to see how I was , he offered me some work , I wasn’t sure but took it in end , it’s been ok , I go hours not thinking about health , just having a laugh with other drivers / people , but with xpo taking the work I doubt theyl be so helpful .
I get what your saying moaster , 5 years ago I’d of been totally in agreement , I was one of the ones who said what the hell are people doing working at 65 plus ( I’m 63 ) , but then I’d of not thought things would get to me like they have ,but being told you’ve cancer x2 , 1-100 chance of comming out of op , cancer graded at 1-11 with 11 being the most aggressive , normally outside the kidney , rise in psa can mean cancer is becoming more aggressive , mine has been rising for a while etc etc
It’s taken its toll on me , it’s hard to get it all out your mind , seeing mrs & my girls in bits
I believe it will be taken out of my hands by the dvsa , and kidney was the priority , so this year will be sorting out all the things that were put on the back burner , heart , gall bladder etc etc etc
So I won’t be at work much anyway , and my gut feeling I will have my licence rescinded , so that will be it as no- one else will take a risk on me .
It’s just amazing moaster how your life can change in 5 yrs .you can change .
Thanks for all the input.
It seems, so long as it doesn’t get any worse he can carry on driving for now.
Thanks again.
