Hi Billybob, Thanks for the great photo which I am sure is of the yard in Clarence Rd, Portslade. The tractor unit is the same as the one my Dad would have drove when he finished with them in late 1970, The Greens of Brighton cake mix D series in the picture is just like the one he was put on to work out his weeks notice after being with them for about eight years, I guess back then a lot of companies kept you local in the last week of service.

I have just checked Google maps & the yard is still there, nowadays it is an Iveco dealership, It was in fact off of North Street & for the life of me I do not know why but for most of my life I thought it was Clarence Road. I wonder if the long gone pub was called the Clarence.

Thats a really good question, I am not sure when the transport side ended or merged, The CM article I think starts to show the break up of the company.

PD Wharfage I believe became PD Ports.

Hi
interesting article, does Nicholls of Brighton ring a bell, a post in 2008 suggested that Nicholls was taken over or became PD Transport,
In Commercial Motor archive it has an article in 1961 about Nicholls being acquired by The associated Coal and Wharf companies group.

PD or Powell Duffryn still exists. They operate ships. ADM Oil Seed ■■■■ plant in Erith has employees working for PD concerning ship offloading.

I don’t recall the name Nicholls, My father worked for Corralls on the general haulage side of the business from 1964-68 then with PD 68 to 71 we then moved to London, They were taken over by PD & completly separated from the coal & fuel section which was run as PD Corralls, I remember them moving vast quantities of paper reels from a company across the road from the depot, at weekends the whole area was taken over by the fleet as there was no way they all could fit in the yard.

PD’s became Southern Port Services in the 80’s and moved from Ellen Street over to the other side of the harbour. I worked for them on timber and general haulage for about 4 years and finished with them around a year or so before they curtailed the road transport side. I think that may have been around 1990
