Owning as a hobby

Hi, I’m new here so forgive my ignorance!
I’ve been wanting to own a truck as a little hobby, I’ve got a category c licence and was wondering if one can drive say a renualt magnum without the 5th wheel being attached or do I need the appropriate licence?
Also what would a rough guide be to all costs for running a truck that would only be used no more than 100 miles a month if that?
Thanks in advance
James

■■■■, I just sold a lovely Renault Magnum last week…

But to answer your questions, you can drive one on a Class C licence so long as it doesn’t have a trailer attached, you don’t need to remove the fifth wheel as it has absolutely no status whatsoever in law, private tax and insurance will be about £400 to £500 a year, so however much for parking and then diesel at about 10mpg.

'm not 100% sure yet, but the truck was getting tired and needed replacing. For the time being I’m spending a few months cruising about on my boat, then I’ll look at my options. I might lease a truck, I don’t want to take on any more finance, but there is so much employed work where the boat is normally moored (near Rugby) that I might just do that. I’ve earned a reasonable living running a truck, but certainly not a fortune and I might just opt for an easy life!

Thanks for the reply! Would I be subject to a taco graph?

James

Sold it to an exporter, which surprised me a bit because I didn’t think there was much of an export market for Magnums. It was out of MOT, I thought about getting it MOTd and I might have got a couple of grand more for it but in the end I just decided to walk away from it there and then…

This was me earlier today. I went right under the M1 at Watford Gap, I looked up at the trucks whizzing past at 56mph and thought “You poor sods” :stuck_out_tongue:

I believe you have to run a tachograph in all trucks over 7.5t even is they are for private use.

Are you planning to do the maintenance yourself?

As somebody who drives trucks that stand a lot we have a lot of problems with things corroding or ceasing up more than wearing out.

private use so no tacho needed and no calibration req’d , took old Leyland I had for test which was for private use only, tester said I should lock tacho and take key out so it is only a speedo, try nfu for a quote I think I paid £70 fully comp for my Leyland mastiff unit afew year ago, and £96 for an old Bedford 12tonne rigid last year , if 1 office ■■■■■ about try a different 1 they aint got access to all nfu policies apparently, try and keep it under cover and get somebody with a class 1 to give it a run with a loaded trailer every now and then keep the shoes clean, downrate it to £28 tonne get tax for £165

With regard to tacho use its over 25 yrs old is exempt ,there was a similar thread on here last week .

and the regional NFU offices are no good - You have to deal with NFU direct at Stratford on Avon on 0800 072 0168

& ask for a Vintage Commercial Vehicle Policy

does not have to be vintage - just 15 years old to qualify

Awesome thank you for your help guys!

Good job.[emoji41]

I was caught up in that bad truck accident on M6 N yesterday morn@ Sandbach and passed over a canal there.
I saw a narrow boat chugging along on it and it does look appealing for a relaxing time!!![emoji6]

Hey there Harry, do not drink that bottle of cider deposited on your vessel, it was me that threw the bottle of Truckers Tizer over the bridge .
