Owner Operator in need of advise

newmercman:
On behalf of the more decent members on trucknet, I’d like to apologise to Waynedl for the disgusting remarks made by Harry Monk and say thatwe all hope that the remarks didn’t cause you too much distress at this very sad time

I don’t know if you are deliberately missing the point, but the point is that Wayne’s employer is a scumbag. I’ve worked for scumbags such as that myself and now I don’t.

Quite why you feel the need to apologise to Wayne for that, or attempt to incite violence is beyond me.

Stop baiting each other- if you cant post without trying wind up another member, dont post at all, If you struggle we will help you with this  , whoever you are :bulb: . take it to PM or e-mail, or ignore each other, which ever way I dont care but stop this petty squabbling.

Well said, there’s enough crap in the industry without fighting with each other.

Harry Monk:
Well, it’s true that you are liberated from things like this…

waynedl:
So, I booked next week off to have a hols with my missus, no probs there, but 1 of the dogs is very old and was getting pretty ill, so got her booked into the vets for yesterday.

Anyway, asked boss if there was any chance of the Friday off too, he says no chance. Took dog to vets, she was put to sleep, told boss he’s going to have to cover it, not in best state of mind for driving an artic on a Friday afternoon etc. He said he couldn’t cover it, so I turned my phone off…

Now, we don’t have any kids, our pets are our family, and the old girl had been with us for 13yrs and was fully grown when we got her (rescue dog).

What you reckon? Job hunt or just a bollocking?

Are you for real :unamused:

You go around bleating that you’re being victimised and you make a post like that about someone losing a pet that they cared a great deal about, the poor bloke said the pooch was like one of his kids and you mock him ffs :unamused:

Sorry NMM, but I’m not seeing any mocking, so could you point it out please?

newmercman:
I reckon you need to forget all about rulers and other promotional material, with a gob like yours you’d be much better off keeping a low profile, oh and I’d up your BUPA coverage too, the way you’re going it won’t be long before someone drags you from the cab of your lorry and gives you a good hiding :unamused:

Wouldn’t “someone” also have to have misread Harry’s post first?

Is it that Harry has simply pointed out that being your own boss frees you from bad or insensitive bosses, such as Wayne seems to have?

To cover the O/D scenario, we’d have to substitute factory owner or freight forwarder for ‘boss,’ but if that’s the case, I think you’d just get “that load had better be there on time” instead of “no, you can’t have Friday off.” IMHO, this would still leave Wayne in the position of being compelled to go to work.

An O/D might have access to somebody that he can call as emergency temporary cover and has the power to make that decision, but an employed driver unfortunately doesn’t have much choice once his boss has made up his mind.

For the record, I must say that IMHO Wayne’s boss could have been a bit more sensitive in the circumstances. :frowning:

To be honest, I’m baffled that anyone could have read anything into it other than that.

Harry, step away and put the spoon down, your not helping either… just let it all drop and get back to topics that this forum is built for, if you have any other comments or any one else does take it to PM or E-Mail - last warning for all, we are not interested in this little fued between folks and to be frank are quite happy to lose all those involved from using this forum if they persist in carrying it on…

JUST DROP IT ALL OF YOU

any further nonsense from anyone will simply be deleted- we cant be arsed with such playground antics as is being displayed by so called adults in this forum atm.

I think I can see what you was trying to get at Harry, but sometimes being your own boss can go the other way what I mean buy that is there’s been many a time when I felt like not working for various reasons but I’ve still worked because obviously running my own truck incurres standing costs and I no it’s a awful saying but if the wheels ain’t turning I ain’t earning

Obviously I have standing costs too and need to work the truck as much as possible, but the point is that if I can’t work on a certain Friday because of some family commitment, in which I would include having to have my dog put to sleep, something which will almost certainly have to happen in the next year or two, than I would just be able to say that I wasn’t available on Friday and that would be the end of it.

So for me that’s a huge advantage over being employed by a bad boss, as the driver in the scenario I referred to is.

Point taken, I’ve put him on my “ignore” list now.

What sort of money are people paying to insure an artic?

I read it a couple of times, then came back to it a few hours later and still reached the same conclusion :open_mouth:

If, as it seems, I misinterpreted your meaning Harry, then I apologise to you

Now, back on topic, as an Owner Driver you’re more tied to a company than an employed driver, in Wayne’s case if he does get the boot he can have another job in a few phone calls or go on an agency, an Owner Driver getting the boot would be in a far worse position. To take it further, if you get on the tour/show circuit, do you really think that you could just leave the tour  The old saying the show must go on is so true, personal circumstances do not come into it, the truck must arrive at the venue on time, it’s not open to debate, it’s a must do :open_mouth:

It’s a moot point because it will never happen. Oh no sorry, my mistake, “it’s just quiet at the moment” and “there’s a recession on”.

In fact this year is already shaping up to be very busy on the tour circuit.

What exactly is your experience of operating a truck Rob?

Cue RobK’s disappearance from thread.

We don’t like each other, but good point Harry. :sunglasses:

If Rob K does disappear from this thread, never mind, I’m sure his alter ego will post again as he did just before

Of course it is! Gregory’s tour circuit, right?

Rob K:
Of course it is! Gregory’s tour circuit, right?

No, that’s what I will be doing in between any tour work I pick up.

And your knowledge of operating a truck is?
