From what i gather on here its about £1.10 a mile(you get paid by the mile). All depends on how many miles your doing…
And by the sounds of it with some one like Maratime, not that many.
Basically, as an O/D working as a subcontractor for one of the big container fleets, they tell you the rate and if you dont like it theres always someone that will. Most of the big players rates are around the same
. I did a few years with a big company then got on with a smaller family firm whose rates were far better, even then they dictated the rate.
. Dont do containers anymore
you could give a few of them a phone call and find out exactly what they pay, and dont forget to ask about payment times,
e g 30 days, 60 days, or the dreadfull 90 days from the end of month

I reckon it is possible to survive as a subcontractor if you keep an eye on costs. NOT being an owner driver this is probably all wrong but say you were on £1.15 a mile. If you did 1650miles that would make you £1897, lets call it £1900.
I’m not to sure what fuel would be for that, so lets say £1000
Then:
Truck finance: £200
Insurance, tax, maintenance and other things: £200
Wage: £500
I have probably missed some things out(not being an owner driver and all
) but it seems possible if you just want to earn a drivers wage…
Please correct me where i am wrong (not by saying hes just a ■■■■■■■ school boy) so me and others can learn.

I’ve been thinking about that JD, though to keep it in line with sweets I like I think I’ll go with QAMAAWB
WB = Wham bar
I don’t work for A customer.
I use the principal that if the bigger firms and clearing houses can find a margin when subbing work to o/d’s then there’s scope for me to command a higher rate for a better service.
It’s still a work in progress but after a lot of cold calling and late nights emailing etc, prospective clients, I have managed to build a tidy, albeit small, portfolio of work.
I pull roro trailers when my other work goes quiet. These are at the minute around 1.23 to 1.28 per mile.
that is the lowest I will pull for.
This gives me a bit of bargaining power when talking to some of the less scrupulous agents who generally want you to run for between 1.00 and 1.18 per mile.
Converesly my best paying job is just shy of 2.60 per mile
Yes, all the above are for the round trip.
Christ and there’s me about to go my self for £2.10 a mile ← cant afford to drop below £1.90 and thats me working on a 20% proffit rate :s back to the drawing board i see!!!
A lot of my work recently is local, within a 100 mile radius.
These jobs I price up using an hourly system.
3 hours to facilitate loading/tipping
+
the driving time for the round trip.
I divided my standing costs by iirc 10 hrs for the day and added the max ammount of derv i’d burn per hour plus what i wanted to achieve after these costs, again over the 10 hours and came up with £X.■■ p/hr.
So for example a 2 hour run to, say, thrapston would be charged out at 7 hrs x the £X.■■ p/hr figure.
9/10 times this system gives me a quick and accurate way of responding to a phone enquiry from a customer without dithering and looking like a muppet in front of said person.
Generally, anything over the 100 mile radius I use a fixed mileage rate with a percentage premium for hazardous jobs.

Danny, if you can get £2.10 per mile round trip or even £1.90 then go for it. I doubt there’s many if any haulage firms on a 20% profit margin. My best figure was 10% over a few years and even that is doing very well. Most big haulage firms work on a 3 or 4 % profit margin with a lot making big losses in the recession.
