Overtaking in lane 3

have in the past and will do it again. with all the fourwheelers doing 50-60kph in two lanes with only a whiff of snow on the road. What kind of excuse would I need then?

Squiddy:
Could be that lots of drivers with little experience of motorways are using the motorways to travel for xmas. I’ve seen so many more cars join the motorway and head straight for the middle lane these last few days.

I got stuck behind one for 5 miles today on the M27. Wouldn’t move over even when it was clear so in the end I overtook in the outside lane. I was in an unrestricted 7.5t so it wasn’t like I was holding up traffic, but still shouldn’t have done it. Half expected her to speed up and leave me stranded, but she didn’t. I expect she didn’t realise I’m not allowed to use the outside lane (I’m assuming unrestricted 7.5T aren’t allowed to).

why?

Over taking in lane 3 by HGVs seems to be more common. :smiling_imp: Im seeing it more as I hit the rush hour traffic on the M62 west bound past leeds. Even with the lane split at the M1, there are drivers jumping into lane 3 at castleford & europort to get past the M1 ffs.
Ive yet to take anyones N/S mirror off as they pass me with those who have sat patiently in lane 2 for several miles. Likewise there are drivers of a similar breed, who heading through the road works on the A1 at leaming bar - Dishforth deem it ok to drive along the narrow outside lane where it is >6ft6"< wide, but I wonder if theyd be able to explain a damaged mirror to the TM.

I saw alot of this when I was stuck on the M25 for 5 hours the other week.

The only time i’ve ever done it is when I’m going down th A21 from the M25 and i want to get past the que. I know it’s not right but I don’t see amy major harm in doing it

Silver_Surfer:
Had a dirty white trailer on the last few days and was going to write in big letters “Do you really need to be in this traffic jam?”.

My lorry’s dirty, I’m going to try that en-route to Neasden!

In the last few years the congestion has become so bad as to render this outside lane ban a complete nuisance, if the laws kept up with the current road conditions, then it would ease the congestion, currently it only serves to make it worse.
I do use the outside lane when I deem it neccessary and in the interests of safety and continued traffic flow…I would go to court and explain my actions if required to do so…I am not accepting a fixed penalty for anything, they are a violation of my human rights.
Driver education for car owners has never seemed so much more in need than it is right now!..Few truck drivers could do with some common sense and a bit of courtesy too :imp:

Is it any wonder lane 3 is being used rather than sit in queuing traffic racking up the minutes on a digi card.

your not breaking the law using the outside lane on the A21 you can also use the outside lane going over QE2 bridge at dartford BECAUSE ITS NOT A MOTORWAY. the outside lane rule only applies to motorways and not ‘A’ roads.

I meant using the 3rd lane where the M25/A21 split. Does that make sense?

and i only use the 2 middle lanes on the QE2 because i hate heights and get scared in either of the lanes on the edge

if my memory is correct if your staying on the 21 the inside lane goes to the 25 as soon as the white line between lanes 1 and 2 changes from a long dash to small dash you can go out to lane 3 you then treat it as 2 seperate roads

an unrestricted 7.5t can use the outside of a 3 or more lane motorway, a restricted one can’t.

skids:
Ive always been told this is a no-no but in the past few days I’ve seen more do it than I have in the last 20 years of driving. Surely a bit of snow doesn’t give us an excuse! 1 of them was a Stobart, I overtook him a bit further up the road while he was plodding in lane 1, WTF was the reason to fly past everything in lane 3 to then force people to overtake him

Par for the course. Since the start of this bit of inclement weather I’ve observed quite a broad spectrum of bad driving. Worst is the ‘colour-blindness’-people running red lights. Then you get just about every example of muppetry, ‘justified’ by oh, well, it’s been snowing. Then you get the tossers in cars driving Miss Daisy on the M1 40mph FFS, roads wet but not icy :imp:
