Happy Christmas and a happy new year to all the truckers out there, can anyone help me with any info on where to start or how to become an outside broadcast truck driver,i know there are various companies out there(sis, arquiva, arena, adi and so on) but i am struggling with how to get into these companies,or if they are looking for any specific qualifications-i have a work history of formula 1 and currently doing event work, any help would be greatly appreciated thanks
I have no info on this type of work personally, but IIRC there was a thread here a few months ago regarding this type of work. A forum search may turn it up. I think the gist of it was that you also needed a backround in rigging, electronics etc.
Hope that helps.
They might use Agency drivers, I know the agency I used to work for used to supply them to the BBC, I think they tried to use the same drivers as much as possible.
Cloudbass were looking for driver/riggers a few weeks ago, apparently they’re winning quite a few contracts.
jobsearch.direct.gov.uk/GetJob. … bID=387975
& at circa £18k I can see how they’re winning them !
There was a thread sometime back on the same subject.
The conclusion was that most drivers are riggers 1st & driver 2nd, and its not unusual for riggers & sparkies to be put through their test, instead of employing someone who just drives
That’s my line of work. OB drivers are also usually ‘riggers’ who have to install cables etc. at each venue and also drive the vehicles. The rigging aspect of the work is not hard to learn if you have the sort of gumption most drivers have.
The biggest employer is SIS Live but there are quite a few more. They are mostly London based but there are a few in the regions. You might also consider ‘Big Screens’ and ADI are one of the leaders in that field. The work is mostly freelance and paid at a daily rate. The best advice I can give is to contact the various companies and ask to speak to the facilities manager or scheduler. I would suggest trying Visions (Staines) +44 (0)1784 411000, ADI (Preston) +44 (0)1772 708 200, SIS Live (Langley) Tel: +44 (0)1753 588088, Televideo (Sheffield) +44 (0)114 249 1500. Don’t bother with Arquiva, they no longer do OBs.
Just read the previous thread with a smile. Money is not so good these days and there is less exotic travel as TV standards have levelled and host feeds are used more often. Most of the work is sport, horse racing, football, rugby, golf etc. It is physically demanding and the hours can be long (no tachos in TV work).
PM me if you need any more specific information.
Aww don’t mention it Nick, you’re very welcome.
Just seen on Job Centre website ( or whatever it’s called now ) …
Translux International @ Iver ( Bucks) want HGV Class 1 drivers for “film / TV” work … 30% driving … + other work … might not be quite what you were looking for … BUT … it might be a way into the type of work … get some experience / get to meet & chat to others … jobs get filled by word of mouth ( as has been said ).
No idea about this firm … not my type of work. Others on here might know of them

It’s catering and motorhome work. Don’t know much about the company but it’s a busy and growing sector. It could certainly be a step in the right direction.
You could start small with internet broadcasting, if you’re good then local bigger stations may pick you up as a host slot.
Thankyou everyone for all your help and i will keep you informed if i have any luck…to all the truckers out there…Happy New Year and drive safe
