I have worked for cowboys and it was cash in hand , but the lorry did get serviced but unfortunately the gaffer is doing a 15 year stretch for other issues.

It’s operators like this why the commercial vehicle unit of the police and DVSA carry out random checkpoints and when they carry out sporadic purges on non compliance of not wearing seatbelts and the use of mobile phones at the wheel it potentially leads to more significant and sinister evidence of law breaking.
The amount of times traffic police hear the old saying of you should be catching rapists, murderers , and robbers rather than stop me for a minor traffic offence often leads to further enquiries of crime .
While DVSA are checking your load security, or lack of , expect an unannounced visit to your yard and burning the shed with the tachograph records inside is a faux pas.

Truth to tell I knew of an operator some years back who ran his triaxle trailers with the brakes rendered inoperable on the lead axle - fixed them for testing and then back to the same old for day to day.

Drum brakes in those days.

Or operators that swap bad tyres for good tyres just for the MOT then put back the back the bad tyres after passing the MOT .

I worked for a cowboy recovery company that had a set of MOT brake pads and bulbs that would be quickly fitted and then removed!

Before air suspension it was common practice to back the S-cam adjusters off ¾ of a turn on the first axle and ½ on the other two. It stopped skipping and skidding, increasing braking efficiency. The issue was more prevalent on 10’ 1" spreads.

I worked for a company a few years ago, Vosa as was then had a policy of Stop on Sight. The owner and the fitters were on a first name terms with the Vosa guys.
