Opinions on a job offer for bulk tipping

Seriously mate, only you can make that decision. Personally it’s not for me despite being two miles from my house, but only because I’m not a fan of tipper work and getting filthy on occasion (too old for that shizzle) and also the money is three or four hundred pounds south of what I’m currently receiving. Never say never though.

Appreciate it. Feel miles better knowing that your pal is there. I’ll give it a shot! Thanks

Based on what Maoster says, same area,.and the tipper firm in question being 400 quid less than what he’s on,… I’d be asking Maoster if there are any vacancies at his place. :bulb:
Just saying…

Fair one Roberto, problem at our place is they ain’t hiring, our customer base has been decimated by Newcold and our coats are on a very shaky nail. Apart from that it’s all rosy

Years since i did the tippers, mostly i enjoyed it, steadiest going on in my day was on grain bulk mainly collecting from farms and delivering to either storage or flour or other mills or breweries, the grain lads spend a fair time queueing at mills but if your take home is guaranteed as it would appear to be and not based on hours driven loads delivered or percentage of truck earnings then some extended times chilling out is fine.

One thing about the job, there’s a lot more cameraderie than in some other lorry work and it ain’t like the old days when you’d be having to monkey your way over and around the body manually sheeting a tipper trailer containing anything from stone to coal to grain to offal.
I’d give it a go.

I tend to ignore the hourly rate when tramping.

Bosses love mugs like you. It allows them to get away with paying you minimum wage.

£750 in ya pocket for being out Mon to Fri seems ok to me.

It was 5 years ago. It isn’t now and hasn’t been since the grab for lorry drivers in 2020-21 saw rates jump up massively.

neon989:
£700 per week after tax take home increasing to £750 per week take home after 3 months.
No hours advised but was told would be maxing out on a monday and back in the yard by dinner time friday. The take home pay includes night out money at £28 a night out which is tax free. So I’m not sure how yo work out a rough hourly rate!

Does this seem like a decent crust to earn?

No. Take off the night out money and it’s £600. I take that home for 3x 10hr night shifts including breaks. You’ll have most likely done 30hrs by parking up on Tuesday or a few hours into Wednesday. Don’t believe them when they say you’ll be back in the yard by dinner time Friday.

No wonder you were offered the job. I suspect that they’ve hardly got people queuing up to work for them and hope that they can get someone relatively new willing to work for not much above minimum wage.

SWEDISH BLUE:
Night out money is not part of wages, so -£100 means wages are £600. 50 hr week is £12 per hr. 60 hr week is £10 per hr. Your choice

Rubbish , he will have £700 go in his bank on a Friday not £600 , his pay slip will make no mention of the £28 being not part of his wages , it will just say gross , net ( inc night out money / bonuses) , he can spend the night out money on beer like any other part of his wage if he wants

Hi all,

Just looking for peoples opinions on a job offer I have that I’ve accepted but not due to start for a couple of weeks while I work my notice. Im new in terms of class 1 driving - 6ish months of experience on box trailers doing multi drop which I’ve decided isnt for me.

Went for interview and got offered the job (advised i had no experience on bulk tipping but was told someone would be out with me for a week - then a week shadowing - truck following me or me following it to site.

This is what I was told

Class 1 - bulk tippers
mon-fri tramping
£700 per week after tax take home increasing to £750 per week take home after 3 months.
No hours advised but was told would be maxing out on a monday and back in the yard by dinner time friday. The take home pay includes night out money at £28 a night out which is tax free. So I’m not sure how yo work out a rough hourly rate!

Does this seem like a decent crust to earn? Is bulk tipping a decent job? I always seem to see tippers racing around on the road at breakneck speed with not much regard to anyone (not tarring all drivers with the same brush but predominently seems to be the tippers that do this?

Thanks in advance!

I’d not rule out being back by dinner time on a Friday whilst tramping , it’s not something I recognise, I was just happy to get back
But I know loads who were done & in the car & home by not much after dinner time , would really ■■■■ me off when I’d think I had a early finish , asked for one ,got back 3 pm ) & the car park was deserted & you’d struggle to find somewhere to park the lorry , no idea how they did it , but they did
So don’t rule it out

I’m interested to know what you think is acceptable, as a take home wage, to tramp all week…?
I’m salaried and take home the same each week.
Easiest job I’ve ever had and rarely do a 15 or a 10hr drive. Does happen, but not regularly.
I keep my eye on indeed and most class 1 jobs recently are advertised at less than I currently earn.
I see very few high paying jobs advertised…

I don’t usually agree with Conor as he’s normally a pompous ■■■ but I’m kind of with him here and what he’s getting at.

How many hours you are doing is relevant when on salary as it can make the hourly rate poor and employers take advantage of that.

No idea what you earn or how many hours you do but in the case of the OP and what he’s asking, let’s say he does 60 hours a week in this new job and his take home is £650 (as night out money should not be included) then it’s pretty crap because it’s around £10.80 an hour.

£10.80 is crap money for any type of class 1 work, let alone one where it will be go, go, go, rush, rush, rush as this will likely be and there’s a good chance you will be regularly maxing your daily hours.

Take the job, I’ve taken the easy life on tippers now after years on flats. Apart from milk it’s probably one of the easiest haulage sectors. The only time I’ve ever broken a sweat is when I had a load of stone in overnight and it froze hard. We do mostly grain ect but some aggregate too. You are not pushed more than any firm that is trying to make money from trucks, and only ever as much as you let them. Load bonus is a thing of the past so you won’t be constantly chasing. If doing aggregate then most places finish at 4, most mills aren’t 24h tip either so your hours depend on if you get loaded/tipped. Farmers will load you late if it suits them, and that can end up in an overnight stay in their yard with an offer of tea. The work is so much better than other sectors, no sitting in drivers waiting rooms ect. The camaraderie is still present with the bulk lads and you’ll get all the help you need when you go to new places, which is just as well because they are taking pish when they say you’ll have someone with you for a week, then another truck follow you for a week. You might get someone with you first job but that’ll be it. Don’t worry though there’s nothing to it. Definitely give it a try, most lads on bulkers wouldn’t do anything else

Your salary/hourly pay is a minimum guaranteed amount of money you will get regardless based on your contracted hours, night out money is not guaranteed and you don’t get it when off on holiday, if work goes slack and they don’t need you to night out then you don’t get it.

It’s a sum of money paid to you to compensate the fact you are away from home for the night, by all means spend it on what you like when you are out but it should never be included when advertising what a job pays. Companies use this trick to make their pittance pay seem slightly better and drivers go along with it.

I’m pretty certain all those people who work away on business or trade work and get put up in a hotel don’t include it in their salary calculations.

This…

Every time. Proper grown up jobs call it salary + bens.

NEVER include night out money as wages.

Alot of valid advice opinions etc. So thanks for all input. I’m gonna take it and give it a crack. If nothing else it’s a new experience and another string to the bow. I guess if I hate it I can always go elsewhere but someone who commented advised he’s got a mate who works for this specific place and loves it there. The owner I met seems a straight shooter and does the planning. The money is after tax and I get paid the same even if I take a week off so seems pretty decent. We’ll see. I start a week on monday. If anyone’s interested I’ll give an update after I’ve been there a week or 2.

I’ve always said that I’d rather regret something I have done rather than something I haven’t done.

Fair play to you, hope it goes well.

This is the type of job you want to go for , 100 million investment , taking on people , I’ve got my name down but there’s still 99 vacancies

Oh there’s a lot of investment going on there alright Dozy. That article was PR to sway the councils decision methinks. Firstly Magnavale don’t operate their own transport, so there’ll be no driving jobs going. Secondly, if you plan on getting a job in the Coldstore all new workers are on NMW and furthermore the new “exciting “ Coldstore will be a dark store, oxygen free and fully automated, so not much of a requirement for bodies unfortunately.

the maoster:
oxygen free

I found that…

Such a revelation and then I thought, why didn’t I think of it all those years ago? No rats, no bugs, minimal lighting, less wiring. It’s just win win for the share holders again.

Proper grown up jobs never quote take home pay, they state it gross. Including night out money is the opposite of stating take home. Sounds like a salary of 40k ( plus n/o)

Not to mention a considerable saving on fire suppression. No oxygen = no fire.

Outrageous! How dare you approach a driving job with such a reasonable attitude, you’ll get some grief for that to be sure
