Anyone able to help as to whether I would be required to inform Office of traffic commissioner if I began using a trading name for my Ltd company?
For example (using purely fictional names for obvious reasons):
Im registered currently as A. CYZ ltd
I want to start using a trading name, purely for the reason of marketing. I.e if i worked in specialist popcorn haulage and I wanted my trucks livery, letterheads, company emails and website depicting ‘POPCORN MOVEMENTS UK’ as A. CYZ ltd doesnt roll off the tongue very well. Would i need to make the traffic commissioner aware?
I would still be legally operating, accounting and representing A. CYZ ltd and all my paperwork would make it clear that POPCORN MOVEMENTS UK was a trading name of A. CYZ ltd
All my trucks would also be registered, insured and taxed by A. CYZ ltd, all the maintenance providers and schedules etc would all remain as is on the operator licence the only change would be using a trading name.
Will be giving the office of traffic commissioner a call next week to make sure but thought to ask on here of anyones experiences as I am looking at getting website etc. Set up ASAP and my Sunday this week is looking very free.
any change in the business name or address (by letter within three weeks. A limited company changing its name must send the original certificate confirming change of name by special resolution)
Sorry misread post so no need to send certificate. Do you intend to change livery on vehicles. I wold certainly inform TC as it could save a load of admin grief in the future
The O licence should be in the Ltd Co name, but you advise the trading name
Have a look at the following example
This is a franchise depot for UK Mail (now part of DHL)
B & L Equipment are the Ipswich depot
Licence in their name, shows the trading style that appears on the vehicles operated
OF0228703
B & L EQUIPMENT LTD
Licence details (OF0228703)
Business type : Limited Company
Trading names : UK MAIL
Toddy2:
Pretty sure you can trade as whatever you like

Thank you Toddy, that makes complete sense. I just checked my online Operator licence account and realised there is literally a box for me to advise a trading name. Appreciate the help
