Ontario license transfer (CANADA)

I’m new so Hi All!

Here’s my question:

I know I can’t transfer my HGV 1 license to Ontario but I’m trying to figure out if anyone knows how an Ontario company goes about hiring a foreign driver and gets them driving ASAP?

I have international driving license which is valid for 3 years. I know I have to switch over to a G license as soon as or within 60 days. But can I use my International license to drive a semi while I sit for tests?

What is the procedure to get an AZ license in Ontario? I am on the brink of a job offer at company that need my skill as HGV driver and also for loads of other skills. I know the immigration process pretty well so don’t need that info, just info on getting AZ permit.

Thanks in advance.

I imagine it is similar to Manitoba insofar as you are not required to do any waiting periods as you are classed as experienced. This means that you would be able to drive on your UK licence in order to do the training, and then you transfer your UK licence on the day of your practical test to an Ontario learners permit and do the driving test.

In short, your UK licence entitles you to drive cars and motorcycles when you exchange it, but is classed as a learners permit for trucks. You can, as best I know, drive for 60 days on your Class 1 from the UK, but it isn’t worth it really as you may as well just get the test done and out of the way.

Hi

Thanks!

I presume you are talking about AZ/HGV license only.

How difficult is the driving test in Ontario?

Manitoba and Ontario - two different provinces, two different governments so could be different so any expats in Ontario who would be in the know, please speak up.

Thanks
R

Ontario, as far as I know, does not have a PNP for quick citizenship.

Check out the link at the top of the forum to TN Canada for info about the tests there, and the nightmarish pre-trip part of the test.

You’re wrong. Ontario has a pilot scheme running for PNP. Also PNP does not lead to citizenship. It leads to permanent residency.

As I said, I’m pretty clued up on the immigration process and don’t need any info on that. I’m looking for info on speeding up the process of getting my AZ license in Ontario as I am a class 1 in Europe. (Not necessarily a UK license.)

I’ve checked out TN Canada and found nothing in there that answered my question. The forum is pretty much dead and the blog is about a different province. My question is about Ontario.

Thanks anyway.

Ontario’s Ministry of Transport, that should help a bit…

Google for a school, like I did, and find truck schools who can help.

Having got your G licence, get their equivelent to a provisional A/Z entitlement.
My Class I licence was accepted by my employer and he just needed to see that I was competent at driving one of his trucks (all 379 Pete’s with all the ‘bling’).A bit of time with another driver and I was good for the test.
If you haven’t yet done so,get the ‘Official Truck Handbook’ and it’s companion The Air Brake Hand Book. These are most important reading and while much of the content is common sense (to experienced drivers)they will provide all the answers to the examiners questions – I think the examiner needs to know that you have studied them - so ‘do it by the book’. The ‘pre-trip’ (circle-jerk) might seem somewhat outdated (and a nightmare trying to remember the order of things)but that’s what he wants to see you do.
Keep him sweet and you’ll have no problems (get him a Timmies)
Books can be found at Crappy Tire/5th Wheel etc or your local Drivers Licence Office.
Good Luck for the test. Once you’ve passed ,you will have all of North America to experience.
Remember, you will ,with your A/Z licence, have a CVOR - very important that this is kept ‘clean’,as along with police checks and regular drug tests,it will be a record of your conduct.
Hope this gives you a bit more information

You should be able to do it in a couple of weeks, no problem, the Ontario one is slightly more difficult from what I’ve seen , as far as the reversing goes, it’s a little bit more involved than Manitoba, once you have your LMO your done, mine took 2 days in Manitoba as Bob knows. hows it going Bob better weather now I bet.

I’ve googled to the point the cows come home. I also checked mto and didn’t find what I was looking for. Those sites are mainly for citizens. Not for foreign nationals, apart for the page on moving to Ontario at mto.

Thanks anyway.

Your LMO was amazingly quick, Cliff. If you came as a nominee then you wouldn’t need an LMO as you would already be sponsored.

As for the test and training, as best I can tell it isn’t that far removed from Manitoba but I will check with some of our Ontario drivers when I can.

Yeah , hi Bob, I just meant that while in Ontario watching some guys at the test centre, the reversing part is a little more invoved, that was all.
