One million US jobless to lose financial aid

Job seekers attend career fair in Florida (7 November 2013) Some 4.1 million Americans have been out of work for six months or longer

More than a million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits after an emergency federal programme expired on Saturday.

Lawmakers failed to agree on an extension of the scheme before the US Congress began its winter recess.

Former President George W Bush introduced the assistance plan in 2008 at the start of the recession.

Under the programme, jobless people received an average monthly stipend of $1,166 for up to 73 weeks.

The White House says the benefits have kept millions of families out of poverty, but many Republicans argue that the scheme’s annual $25bn price tag is too expensive.

The stalemate comes two months after a budget fight in the US Congress led to the partial shutdown of the government.
‘Urgent priority’

President Barack Obama has vowed to push for the renewal of the expired programme when Congress reconvenes in early January.

“The president said his administration would, as it has for several weeks now, push Congress to act promptly and in bipartisan fashion to address this urgent economic priority,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

An estimated 1.3 million people will initially be cut off with the end of the “emergency unemployment compensation”, US officials say.

Millions more could be affected next year after they lose state benefits, which in many states expire after six months.

The financial aid was designed to help US citizens who lost their jobs during the recession and were unable to find new work while receiving the state benefits.

The US unemployment rate fell to a five-year low of 7% in November, according to the US Labor Department.

But the long-term jobless rate remains a problem for the economy, with some 4.1 million Americans currently out of work for six months or longer.

There has been repeated political wrangling between the Republicans, who control the lower house - the House of Representatives - and the Democrats, who have a majority in the upper house, the Senate.

Because of disagreements between the two houses over federal government spending, the US Congress failed to pass a budget before the fiscal year ended on 30 September.

Both sides eventually struck a last-gasp deal in October to end the federal shutdown and raise the federal debt limit.

Only financial help I ever got was workmans comp when I broke my ribs and my company have to pay for that. All the BS about immigrants sucking off the tax payer in the USA is total crap, I never got a cent when I was unemployed for nearly a year. This country is a disgrace as far a any benefits and healthcare goes.

Pity this doesn’t happen in the UK, then there wouldn’t be people like my brother who’s been unemployed & claiming allsorts for 29 yrs now.
If they made the long term unemployed work for their dole money at minimum wage rate, doing menial jobs like keeping parks/ public toilets/streets etc clean, I suspect they’d soon have a massive reduction in claimants.

Why would they be ‘working for their dole money’ assuming that they’re employed and being paid minimum wage.:unamused:

Sadly it doesn’t work like that. One of my sons was unemployed and signing on a while back. As part of his ‘deal’ he had to work full time for his benefits. Bearing in mind he was only claiming jobseekers (£50 a week or whatever) and no other benefits, he was essentially working for about a pound an hour at the Oxfam warehouse in MK. And he wasn’t the only one there doing it.

So while you may think doleys working for their benefits is a good plan, it would be a good plan if the people earning an equivalent to a full timers salary were doing the work for their benefits plan, but I’ve yet to hear of anyone that has had to do that.

boots,
don’t watch Fox News, heard my suggestion many years ago when I was still in the UK and thought it was a brilliant idea, make the lazy slobs work for their dole money.
Do you have any suggestions yourself ■■?
Of course not, just pump out the normal Leftie yoghurt knitting diatribe by slagging someone else off then going off on one, changing the subject.
WTF has making the scroungers work got to do with life expectancy in the US & my kids staying in my house till they’re 58yrs old with 5 Uni degrees ■■
My views on street crime, simple, public flogging.
People begging, no thoughts, if people want to give, they will.

Dav1d,
about your son, that is disgraceful and not what I was saying at all.
I was talking about the long term unemployed.

Why should anyone who’s unemployed work for sfa.If there’s a job to do then pay a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work.It doesn’t take a genius to understand that your idea will just result in workers being made redundant then being classed as ‘long term unemployed’ and then being made to do the same work as before for the dole money instead of a wage.As they say be careful what you wish for because anyone can become long term unemployed at any time. :unamused:

I know it doesn’t work ‘like that’ which is the point I was making. It’s obvious that the idea of so called ‘workfare’ is all about providing a bunch of freeloading employers with effectively unpaid slave labour.IE who are the real scroungers in this.

And I disagree strongly that “anyone” can become long term unemployed, only if they want to.

Firstly you’ve already contradicted yourself in the case of the example of Dav1d’S son.The fact is he’d have reached the ‘LONG TERM’ threshold to be involved in the workfare scam. There’s no difference between the two claimant types except some dates. If there’s a job to be done then pay minimum wage then there’s no need to rip off workers by making them work for slave wage rates or the taxpayer by paying unemployment benefit to someone who is working.

Carryfast,
I agree with you, except a lot of these scumbags will not work.
Why would they as long as they’re getting money for doing nothing.
Here in Alberta it goes something along the lines of when you work you pay Employment Insurance (EI), and then if you become unemployed you get so much per week/month then the payments are graduated down over time until they stop paying altogether giving people a chance to get back into the workforce, not like the UK, where you can just leech of the working people forever and a day.
What’s your answer to the long term unemployed problem then ■■?

My answer is the good old fashioned American way.Get rid of social security and replace it with private income protection insurance. In which case ironically you can then choose the cover you want to a much better level than the socialist way will ever provide.Which is why I’ve managed to survive financially since losing my job around 15 years ago because of health issues.IE no having to look for some zb menial job on minimum wage as you propose, let alone dole money.Because it covered my own occupation unlike the social security system. That should of course have mean’t the government allowing me to opt out of at least the incapacity and unemployment benefit systems and returning all the contributions paid in for what is just a rip off national insurance scam.

Carryfast,
Great idea, as long as the insurance companies don’t bleed you dry like the USA health insurance or refuse you after the first sign of trouble.

boots,
what do you reckon ■■

I’m not saying that private insurance is ideal knowing the fight I had to get what I was owed from my own policy. But at the end of the day it’s still light years ahead of relying on the effectively non existent state system at least here in the UK.

Sod off Geoffrey , this thread has absolutely no relevance in your life , if you want to troll then do so on the “prof drivers”(cough)forum . World’s your oyster with some of those halfwits :unamused:

Actually Carryfast is making some sense here. working for dole money may seem like a good idea to those who consider doleys to be workshy layabouts, but the unintended consequences of that are that the mega corporations will soon put all the doleys to work at lower than minimum wage, the minimum wage jobs will go and there will be more doleys and the race to the bottom picks up speed :open_mouth:

A graduated system of payments that diminishes over time is an acceptable way of doing things, with the proviso that you only get out what you pay in, if you want more than that, private insurance is the way to go. I like that idea personally, I have no intention of using the facility, like many others, but to have it as a safety net is nice. If I don’t use it, hey ho, that’s insurance for you, sometimes its only benefit is a feeling of security :bulb:
