Passed this on my way to Nuneaton at around 4pm ish…
I was going southbound, the fire was pretty much out, but it’d made a mess, they were closing the M6(N) at the A34 junction and diverting people off there, the queue was down to the Nuneaton exit and probably down to the M1.
M5 was closed at 4A at the same time too, so mayhem.
I came back up the A5

It just goes to show what sort of drivers are in the job nowadays.
any decent driver would have dropped his trailer and moved the unit.

if the unit was on fire, it wouldn’t just go straight up, you’d have time to drop the trailer, saving the trailer and its load.
A couple of years ago one of the chipliners went on fire on the m62. The unit caught fire, and the driver managed to get it onto the services (hartshead I think) slip road. At this stage it appeared to be a small fire, but as soon as he stopped, flames went straight up the back of the cab. if I remember rightly he only managed to grab his phone on the way out. No time for anything else. Unit was wrecked, trailer very badly damaged, and he lost all of his stuff.
About 10 years ago I was driving a Volvo log grab when it went on fire. I noticed flames in the exhaust area. I had time to grab the hand held radio. Within 2 minutes the cab was totally alight. Not a wagon I know but it showed me just how fast a fire can take hold.
Volvo on fire after just a few minutes.
This was a few days later, but all that was left.
Ooops wrong way round!

I agree. First things first you surely would smell the smoke before you even see a fire.
