Why did the driver stop? Judging by the efficiency of the British motor industry, during that era, the car wouldn’t have been missed.
Did the driver not get a good night’s kip and fall asleep at the wheel-tut!

Indeed, that was my first thought, no bends, no high crosswinds, perhaps a chassis failure?
There must be a set of railings or a ballustrade at the summit of those twin sets of steps. Perhaps the roping got caught up in those and the load was a bit top heavy. Seems highly unlikely nonetheless, even though the Bedford had a light chassis.
