hi marcus
the grady hall photo at dawdon brings back memories a few drivers fell off the tanks (no one seriously injured)trying to keep the high pressure hose for washing out under control
good pit canteen at dawdon when it was going
they reckon that area was the best place to fish because of all the slurry going into the sea turning it black
cheers
mick

CONSETT STEEL WORKS

Hi Marcus

I have very vague memories of delivering to Consett Steel Works with one of our small vans when I was about 18. I cannot remember what I was delivering but most likely office furniture.

It was so massive and unbelievable that one day it would close

They went like many others, price of fuel, restrictions, etc, etc. I was also told they couldn’t persuade their bigger customers to pay higher rates. Old story as usual and another company goes bust! Franky. As a foot note, not sure if they have started up again, I was only talking to a guy yesterday who knows them well and it was him that told me about them going bump but things change very quickly in this game.

Speaking of firms closing the doors, Anyone know whats happening at Sam Andersons, ? Regards Larry.

hello buzza the bloke your on about was ernie crone, he did a trunk from mattesons durham to milton keynes every night. this is me and him at normans cafe late 80s

twinsplitter,
hi gary coles was a big employer in the area, still have a pint with a few of their ex employees, clarks and spoors did a lot of work for them , freeways used to take quite a bit of gear in their aswell, do you not have anymore photos of wesleys dodgy jackets , i will have to give him a bell when i get home, are you still on the fridges gary. is ernie still about. i still see mick nairns every now and then.

mickd,

aye mick them pits were a lot of work for haulage companys as you say they all had good canteens, cheap for breakfast and dinners, i went to them from a early age with my father all over the country, mainly with steel from raines steel works at swalwell.

hi carl,

consett steel works that was a major set up as you say covered a vast area, and another major employer in the area, they were another place which 99% of the NE hauliers would have tipped or loaded at.

mark
