Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

My first motor for Waugh’s in 1972 was a mark 1 Atki similar to the one portrayed (180 Gardner). I don’t ever remember carrying empty pallets. Had they been invented then? HaHa.That load could anything but it is not pallets unless they are a foot deep.

Harry, the midway halt is at the council offices at Chester le Street could it be any handier? by the way that 240 bath chair of your won’t be eligible for judging if you got it back after it was stolen from our last"do" so don’t try it on. see you soon .kevmac47

Yeh,looks like your right, but could the 86 behind be carrying the same light load but better sheeted?

Hi George, I must admit things were starting to get out of hand a little bit and I can see why I had to bite my tounge several times at some of the statements been made that were totally untrue, I don’t believe from the Glendinning side that statements were to far from the truth nor did they speak ill of the dead! night shift bri was correct when he said that there was nothing to stop any one else still adding to this excellent thread, the guys were not preventing any other subjects been brought up. Lets face it the site was busy and from what I have heard followers could not wait to read the next episode. There is years of knowledge and old photo’s out there which could only enhance the thread. Never mind I have had my say and put my photo’s back in the attic, going on holiday tonight look forward to catching up with things when I return.

Here Victor posted a pic of me van especialy for you & haven`t commented on it ,tut, tut

Well said Transporterman and George. This is a forum of NE haulage companies, and Glendinning was a major one back in the day. Maybe things got a bit out of hand between Harry and Bob the other night, but it seemed to be banter from both sides.
I along with the majority were really enjoying all the pics, and banter from Glendinnings and have never seen the forum so busy. Unfortunately a small minority decided to try and ruin the thread…Its a free forum so if people want to try and discuss another topic or company they were free to do so. It is just sad that this small minority could not just let things run. It was through the popularity of the Glendinnings posts that the topic continued. Had it not been so popular with people requesting pics or drivers contributing then it would have fizzled out weeks ago. Ten solid pages says quite a lot. Plus now this minority has reduced the contributers on this thread greatly from about 20 down to 3 or 4!

Hi, Having worked for WA Glendinning (1970 -mid 90’s) I can honestly say some of the post’s on here are incorrect and only one sided. We need to stick to the facts and leave personal grudges at home. There is a wealth of stories and photographs yet to be posted. One must remember WA Glendinning himself (Archie) drove maintained and organised in the very early days and was a leading light in the RHA regularly attending meetings in London and the North East, driving the image of the haulage industry forward. From personal experience if you were prepared to work hard and give, the rewards were very positive.

I can only praise Glendinnings started working there at 18 on pick ups and drivers mates, 2 weeks after 21st birthday i had my class 1 licence free of charge. Quite a few lads from the consett and stanley area done the same, sort of an apprentiship, gaining a vast amount of experience at a early age. most of the lads are still driving now. The only downside of the job was gordon he sacked me within a year of getting my H G V licence, they should of thrown the keys away while he was banged up.

Hi,
Lets not get into a negative.

paw123:
Hi,
Lets not get into a negitive re. Gordon Glendinning.

What was Gordon Glendinning jailed for?
According to an earlier post he is still inside.

Hi, fisher
There were quite a few van/pic-up/seven half tonner drivers brought up through the ranks and then onto the heavy stuff
at 21, Gordon Pullman, Harry and Dicky Boland to mention a few.

The new issue of Heritage Commercials has the F86 of Thos Hutchinson of Wark on the front cover and an article with plenty of photo’s of the vehicle now restored and looking brand new. The vehicle had been taken back to its original owners for the article, I only had a quick glance through it but it also explains how Taits of Haydon Bridge became the Volvo dealers for the Northeast and Northwest of England, it was planned that Cawthorn Sinclair would do this but Taits managed to convince McKelvie that they were better geographically positioned to do it. Interesting stuff and good to see that the first UK registered wagon from Volvo started its life in the Northeast. Three new 86’s were delivered to Taits and Hutchinson got the first, wonder who got the other two! Franky.

hiya,
Suspect Young’ies of Leadgate would be in the running to get the others i think just about everyone of their 86s was sourced via Taits and they had quite a few…
