It’s an old north east haulage forum and has been entertaining over the last few weeks, glendinnings is an old ne company and has just had a few drivers chatting, would have been quiet on here otherwise.
As for Harry long retired, he has been corrected on his facts by a few people, and has contradicted himself many times, its just banter and he gives it back.
Now back to the old trucks thread featuring glennys
Thanks bob not long till I retireIf your saying it’s only been entertaining since glendennings ex staff started to contribute you need to think again, the thread would have fizzled out long ago if it had been boring.Ps Harry can hold his corner anyday on this thread, but now its getting offensive, personal and BORING!!!
hiya,
Thanks Kev for the kind words, on reflection I should have known better than to bite i knew I was being “got at” all along but it was my fault for replying and giving them ammunition to blast me with, but i have had a giggle along the way,no harm done, believe me i’m bullet-proof, end of.
thanks harry long retired.
Can I add my ten penny worth as the originator of this thread by saying I’ve enjoyed reading the Glendinning patter on here lately. Despite hogging the thread this doesn’t stop other postingsand hopefully it will spur others to come on with their memories and pictures of other North East companies. It did seem at one stage that a witch hunt was going on against one retired driver but hopefully that is now over. We were all in this together, some for longer than others, and “Lorry Drivers Tales” have always been a feature of our job, so lets see if we can attract some more new faces on here and try to get the thread up to 100 pages in a year.
Cheers, Night Shift Bri

Heres another pic of the late Bill Wilkinson with his pride and joy the Comet0
Kevin this is definatley at the Gateshead Garden Festival. Much as yourself, have done many a happy mile both driving and shotgun in ECN73, with my uncle Bill. Still remember his face when i got the Comet up Kiln Pit Hill, on Ted Hannon’s run in 4TH gear in the high diff ratio. He never beat that.
ECN 73 is still going strong, preserved with a haulier in Banbury,as a cattle wagon.
Happy days,
Iain

I’ve bumped this up George as I was only thinking about R Durham myself.I know they had a big fleet and were awarded “Haulier of the year” once.IIRC they bought out Sandersons, another Teesside company but I’ve yet to see a photo of either or even a mention.

Long time member of Waugh road services.
Great shot of “Blackie” Brian, the only guard dog i’ve ever known that was scared of the dark!!! HE was also the only “staff” member at Waughs that got away with not doing his job properly, He would never come out of his kennel at night. Do you remember Terry Middleton when he first started filling up with fuel standing on his tank feeding the dog his “bait”? Crafty Blackie knew Terry was a bit wary of him and it was the only way he would let him fill.up. After a week or so Terry got the message that the dog was a big softie and they became firm friends. Yeh,Durhams were based at Billingham,Bobby the owner lived at Yarm, there main work was steel out of Lackenby and urea warehousing for ICI Billingham He also done some ICI tank work and had a few tanks on the Phillips black oil job. They took Arthur Sandersons over maybe mid 70s,he was a farmer/haulier from GT/ Broughton, all in all i would say a fleet of about 180ish.He sold out to the firm who bought Hartlepool docks who’s name i can’t remember at this time,Vic.
Does anyone remember J Williamson haulage ,station garage ,stockton on tees, running about the same time Durhams and AV Dawson were using Atkinsons, also Burns Brothers haulage from Barton, cheers
P.S. F7 robbie has posted a Durhams picture just up the thread,on p/61.Vic.
R Durham & Sons was founded by Robert Durham (Bob) and his wife Marley I believe they started in the horse and cart era: the fleet grew to what must have been one of the biggest private operators in the North East with at least one depot that I know of in the West Midlands. The sons Gordon & Bobby ran the operation after Bob retired. Bob died in the early 90’s
I know they took Sandersons over can anyone remember, I think his name was John Thomas who ran the operation, he was found murdered.
