Just been on the Great North Road Book thread and mentioned a telly programme in the 80s that followed one of Glendinning’s car transporters northbound. They stopped off at Norman’s and carried on north. Does anybody remember it or what it was called?
Yes I can remember got a copy on tape somewhere will have to try and find it will fill you in with the details later when I have my lap top on.
That’s excellent cheers. I taped it myself when it was on the telly and also the one featuring Morris Potts from Van Hee’s when he had his trailer curtains slashed at Whitwood Truck Stop. Unfortunately I’ve lost both of them over the years, a pity because you can get them transferred onto dvd now.
ERF64cu1:
There has been no real mention of hauliers from Northumberland yet. Here are a few to bring back some memories:-4
Raymond Hare restored this B series to the same spec as the 2 B series Pentleton & Hare ran DFT511W and DFT512W.3
Mclarens of Belford21
Pringles of Christon Bank0
The Hair must have been donated by Pentleton and Hare!!! Iain.

Hi
I think the programme was Close Up North, Johndee was supposed to do it but at short notice it was decided the timing was wrong as they going to go bust during the next few weeks. The RHA put the tv company onto Glendinnings, in his wisdom Kennygee thought he would pick his best looking driver with a superman physique Billy Whyte to do the deed and reckons that it was nothing to do with the fact he was driving one of the new drawbars!
Billy went in to collect the load that was going to be used in the shoot and found that it was not ready; at short notice Tony Usher an equally good looking driver of similar build who was in the wrong place at the wrong time was drafted in to cover. The film work was good with some excellent shots on the road, it started at Normans with the cameras following the truck up to the Quernhow. There was some good shots in the Quernhow with another two of Glendinnings super troopers taking to the stage namly Brian Backhouse & I think John Boustead. There was also comments from Brian who owned the Quernhow and the farmer from that farm just up the road. I have to admit Tony did a good job and came across really well. PS still looking for the tape.
Durham Fuels was run by Gordon Glendinning, nothing to do with W A Glendinning. Durham Fuels will be remembered in many peoples memories as (allegedly) supplying very “colourfull” diesel, if you get my drift…

That’s the one, I remember the bit about John Penty the farmer from beside the Querhow twisting his face because he couldn’t get his sheep from one side of the A1 to the other.
Hi
Has any one got contact with any of the Glendinning drivers i.e. Shotley Bridge Pity Me and any of the other southern based ones,
What are they doing now, are any still driving?
I believe that the Johnson brothers have all passed away to the big garage in the sky

No mention so far of a car transporter company based in Middlesborough, cant remember the name but they ran yellow Scanias.
The name you are thinking of is Roseberry which was owened and run by Ian Lauriston
Also, Clevestone- John Swales Hartlepool, North East Vehicle Movements (NEVM)-Alan Brown Ponteland Now VM (Hoggs),John Scott Wideopen, I dont think Autocarriers have had a mention and Car Removals.
tango_trucker:
Also Durham Fuels, a Durham based tanker company.
This was part of Glendinnings.
Nothing to do with W A Glendinning Ltd other than one of the directors was director of both companies and they parked in the Durham depot.

Hi George,
Consettbell might be able to help you out on some pics of Durham Fuels, failing that try Customs and Excise or the local press
I am led to believe all the vehicles were confizcated and crushed.
