Do you think they skimped a bit on the engineering■■?

It always strikes me as looking bloody strong, I heard a tale of it being used to tow another wrecker which had a loaded artic on suspended tow as well

The wrecking gear must be about 70 year old by now

hi mickd 1958
Youngs f88 wrecker ended up in the JSY fleet white cab blue chassis drove it a few times when on night shift in the garage
bit underpowerd (compaired to the ■■■■■■■ ) it had home made lifting gear on dont know what happened to it after Halls closed Delves Lane

Are you one of the brothers that served their time at Gradys Dyke ■■■■ ?

Seem to recall your wee slip with the ERF and tipping trailer

hi consettbell
6x6 x 5/8 angle top and bottom mainframe was fitted before gear was lifted on, channell around rear body, lockers were made by Pike Engineering ( Northern Assemblies)

Believe it or not, each boom was only rated for 30 hundred weight when on the old 6x6 AEC l
locked and pinned together (just bellow top sheeves) 5 ton

Will b going up to see brian backhouse nxt week havnt seen him for about 5months but last time i saw him he was ok just gavin a bit bother with his knees. hardest jobs catching him in!

hi paw123
no thats not me he was called terry and is two or three years older than me. i did serve my time at burnopfield garage with him. his twin brother chris served his time at mountsett garage. the times i drove the f88 wrecker it was more powerful than the old leyland octopus wrecker gradys had at the time. it may have been home made lifting gear but it was loads better than the gear we had(at least it had an A frame for suspended towing)

hi , mickd 1958
seems to ring a bell, was it Housemans of Harrogate whose crane and grab was used to recover the load of lime re gradys artic . MTY R could have being reg.

hi paw123
cant remember whose crane it was. as far as i can remember it was glendennings who organised it we managed to get the farmer whose field it landed in to use his tractor with front bucket on to put it into piles for the grab to pick up. the load was only 2cwt light whn on the weighbrige at redcar. if my memory serves me right it was the same driver who went into the ditch that a few weeks previous had ran into the back of another wagon in hawes with his f7 eight wheeler. i recovered that with youngs wrecker on a suspended tow!

There was always a wrecker in the Shotley yard before the ERF, AEC 6x6 AEC 4x4 and an ex WD Dodge with a home made jib using the vehicle winch, before that a 6x6 GMC.

harry_gill:
hiya,
Bobby English was a car transporter driver and would have left Glenny’s when at the Shotley Bridge site and he left before they even had a wrecker i left in about 1975 and never saw one at Shotley.
thanks harry long retired.

Glendinnings had an old Atkinson Wrecker towards the end, that one ended up at Durham.

hi,
it was a6x4 long wheel base mk2, wreckers internationals twin boom gear with a frame,180 gardner, david brown 6 .600 gearbox, eaton back ends, purpose built lockers, sure the reg started VOR , when it came to shotley bridge it had
MEAT HOOK sign written on the front
there also was a Atkinson6x6 mk 1 gritter/ snow plough 180 ■■■■■■■■ zf /kirkstall rear end i think it was ex county council all he gear worked but the salt had taken its toll on the body/spinners. it was still in its yellow livery .when it was sold.

Billy Listers Scania

Hi Gazzad,

Is Billy Lister any relation to Jimmy Lister,(Ex-elddis driver). Probably brothers i think, but not sure. I remember Jimmy owning a LHD Volvo F12.24 Globetrotter 6x4 tractor unit.(circa 1984). He used to live at Annfield Plain, and later was running a few Scania 112s with Gray Adams Trailers.
I think he was working for an Irish Firm but not too sure, dunno if he still lives in North East or has moved away!.

Cheers

Phil.

yep phill Jimmy & Billy wre brothers never seen Jimmy for yrs Bumped into Billy a couple of times in the crickiters Blackhill 2or 3 yr back. The crack about Jimmy pulling for the irish is about the last I heard but that was a few yrs ago.
