Many a time I’ve called into Norman’s on a Friday, Been away all week, skint (no cash machines in those days) same as you got a cup of tea. Mary says “nothing to eat?” no thanks I says ,skint. Next thing plate of chips and gravy sitting in front of me. Can you imagine that happening at a modern truckstop? Used to go for a pint at that pub down the back alley, can’t remember it’s name, the one with the Jack Russell all singed off lying in front of the fire. Back to Norman’s at chucking out time for a tea and a cheese sandwich made from two crusts and a door stopper of cheese. Happy days.

Hi bri… funny how you could always find some stewed steak in the gravy. Was in there one day when this young couple came in, looking well out of place. The young stick like female asked for a sausage sarnie, the look on her face as a plate with 2 slices of bread and about 6 huge sausages was dropped in front of her.    . Can`t remember the name of the pub, the last few years I used the rugby club, some great nights there.

Used to take my lad in when he was only about 6, asked for a small meal and a small cup of tea for him. When we got them there was about 2 less chips on his plate than mine and he had the same size cup as me but half an inch less tea in it and Mary only charged half price!

Same as you Brian had my lad in when he was about 10yr should have seen his face when he got his apple pie & Ice cream

Hullo “night shift bri”,
I never spent the night at Normans, it was too near to home. I suppose that the Pub you may mean is the Brotherton Fox, just back down the road from the Cafe on the same side, just on the junction. A big place. Or if you crossed the Road from the Cafe and walked up the road about three hundred yards and turned left, down a side street, that would have been the Three Horseshoes. Those are the only two that spring to mind.
Cheers, Archie.

hi lads, here is a couple of photo to stir the old gray matter, do you recognize where this is , who can remember arnoco oil they were on the milk market,  bumper

hi brian i think i spent more time in normans than i did at home i think the pub was the 3 shoes what the drivers used no one drank in the fox because you wernt made welcome the most of us used the club and when normans closed they let us wash there and put meals on but it was hard to get the wagons on the carpark and the place just died

Aye the Three Horseshoes, That was it. Never went in the Fox, bit too upmarket but went in the club once or twice. To be honest the crack was good in Norman’s and there was always somebody in there that you knew and the regular night trunkers called in. I remember one in particular. a short lad drove for Bridon running from Willington Quay to Donny Ithink, used to call in Norman’s every night, you could set your watch by him.

Believe it was Maureen I passed, coming off the A1 north to go to Normans. Did think I maybe should have stopped and asked if she wanted a lift to cafe. Was sittinging down with a cuppa when she stormed in, stopped by the table, grabbed the cup and slammed it back down, " dont you ever pass me again without offering a lift or youll be wearing your cup of tea " she shouted. God was I shaking with embarrassment, I then had to crawl to the counter for my meal. She passed the plate over, it was loaded to the gunnels !! and gave a big wink, what a place and a great crew working behind the counter. Remember arriving there one Sat after a week away with enough money for a cuppa and maybe a biscuit. Asked Mary for a cuppa and how much for a biscuit. Do you want a breakfast she asked, no just a cuppa an how much for a biscuit says I, again she asked if i wanted a breakfast so had to tell her I didn`t have enough for a breakfast. Picked up my tea and went and sat down couple of minutes later a full breakfast was put down in front of me, enjoy and pay when your next in says she.

hiya,
Howay now nobody’s given Ann a mention, walked in one brekkie time there’s Ann she’d dyed her hair from blonde to a browny colour, did’nt recognise you with the new coloured hair says I, thought i’d have it all to match for a change was her reply, great lass as was they all, big miss when it closed
thanks harry long retired.

hiya,
just thought i’d air this again to see if anybody does remember Ann she was as much a fixture as Mary.
thanks harry long retired.

hello harry

was she just a small lassie, i remember the faces but only a few of the names, thurs night they used to get in the club before going into ponty, or so i am told anyway, i used to just sit in my cab and watch tv or read a book

mark

Is there no way we can get hold of someone from Brotherton who remembers the lasses from Norman’s and might have some pics of them to jog our memories and let us know what became of them all including Hughie and Mary. Surely young Hughie must still be around. He survived all those thick ears from drivers he woke up asking for their parking fees so he must be able to survive anything!

hiya,
Quite the opposite tallish ,slim and normally blonde, she was usually designated to collecting the used crockery so mostly amongst the customers very pleasant lass she seemed to have been there for ever, i quite liked the digs at Normans always slept like a log always warm and unusually quiet very basic but always clean what more did a rufty tufty lorry driver wan’t.
thanks harry long retired.

not the one i was thinking of, their was a blonde lassie that used to wear bright red lipstick all the time is who i was thinking of but she was kind of smallish,

I’ve got a good pair of jump leads you can borrow if he does keel over Mark. I think there’s more chance of a local team winning the FA cup than Stan financing your medical. regards Kevin.

HA HA
