hiya,
When living in the North West years ago I occasionally overnighted in the Toon and have mentioned previously that I have had return loads to the Lancashire paper mills from Jebbs on one occasion getting the load from a chap who used to use the St Lawrence Cafe as his clearing house, it was crap traffic but got you home and old Robbie Killingbeck said the rate was acceptable, but where was/is Jebbs located Iām blowed if I can remember I know I didnāt have to travel very far to load, the load was bales for the sides and loose to fill the middle up a hard work job but it got you home wonder what H&S would have thought of the loading method in this day and age I well remember the clouds of dust that came free with the load i think they used these loads to get rid of all the accumolated rubbish off the works floors.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry Jebbs is on Walker Road, & are still there as far as I know, Regards Larry
Aye , Jimmy Monarch Transport had an office in Stephen Street, then moved to Albion Row as far as I can remember. Jack Sharkey ended his working days at Simpsons . Nice bloke was old Jack, sadley not with us anymore. Regards Larry
Hereās one to bring a ātearā to Larryās eye,an earlier shot by a few years from the other smarter one of the new Foden steamer.this Foden is on solid wheels. The old man is in ācarriersā garb, apron ect. I understand they plied their trade into one of the Market/s in Newcastle and their customers new where to find them to arrange for their goods to be delivered back towards Consett et al ! but no doubt Larry will maybe have more āgenā on the matter.Thos.Bewick ran quite a few of Foden Steamers prior to, and after, WW1 and only sold out to the Railway when his son John returned from the war an invalid and couldānt carry on the business.I understood from my Grandma and Great aunt(Thos.Bewicks two daughters) that the old lad was heartbroken and lost interest but was still able to get a āgood priceā off the Railway co. as Bewicks had built up a good business over the previous years.cheers Dennis.
Great stuff Dennis, I may have been past where they used to operate from, but this was in the 50s, I used to deliver to a old shop in Cut Throat Lane, at Westwood, have you anymore like lat ? Regards Larry
