I recognise Walter List with his stick! When I worked at Miles Druce Metals in Hebburn his yard was just next to our depot exit. I don’t recognise the driver, but an old pal of mine, Walter Gallon worked for him for a while. Regards Kev.

Walter Gallon!! presume from Hebburn / Bill Quay, that’s a blast from the past

Yes Bob, the same one, I know he also worked for you.
By the way, do you still keep in touch with Keith Wheatley?
Another old acquaintance of mine, if so can you mention our get together on September 16th
At Newcastle Labour Club? Many thanks.
Regards Kev.

Sorry, the last time I saw Keith was 13 years ago at my Dad’s funeral.

Think he was working at Fergies then but I would of thought he will be retired now.

Hi Tyneside
Before and after the war Alfred Bell had over 30 vans a day running between Newcastle and London. 280 miles at 20 mph. I think it was somewhere near Stevenage they had dormitory accomodation. The driver leaving Newcastle stopped and another driver took over in a type of relay. When the driver going down had his legitimate rest he took over another van, proceeded to London & returned to the accomodation dormitory and so although the vans never stopped it took the drivers 3 days with two sleep stops to travel from Newcastle & back via London. In about 1934 my Grandfather made friends with Mr Marks who was Managing Director, He wanted my grandfather to buy a (in those days) large furniture van that was for sale somewhere in Northumberland. Marks said Alfred Bell desperately needed more vans and would buy it but could not get any more A licences. He told my grandfather they could give him plenty of work if he bought it.
We had since 1919 done removals but used flat vehicles roped & sheeted. My dad told me how they loaded them making square very high loads, and hence my grandfather about 1935 bought a Morris Commercial semi-forward control luton van. My dad said it was quite large especially with a tailboard load. We immediately had full use for it and never needed to sub contract from Alfred Bell
Hence our first furniture van was a Morris Commercial which was taken by the Army for war use in 1939 & immediately replaced by a 30cwt second hand year old Bedford which we were fortunate in finding to join our other 6 Bedford 2 tonners.
