The Leyland PD3 on the 22 service to Springwell Estate must have been taken in about the early 1960s as by the mid-sixties the Newcastle Corporation Transport were using PDR1 Atlanteans on that route IIRC. There was a batch of 10 or 15 of the PD3s and by the late-sixties they were confined to the Leam Lane - Throckley (No. 16) and Wardley - Throckley (No. 17) services where I had the dubious pleasure of being a conductor for a couple of years. They were not the nicest of buses to work as there was no ventilation except for the two tiny opening windows at the front of the upstairs so were stiflingly hot in the summer. They also supposedly had heaters but I never worked on one which gave any signs that the heaters had any life in them so they were freezing cold in the winter. And we look back and say “Happy Days”!
AYE But we are still here, With bigger worries about the Covid crisis, Take care and stay safe, Regards Larry.
