I Know that I have posted this photo a few times, But being related to the Smiles family, My Grandad was Isaac Smiles brother the founder of this famous Smiles for Miles haulage firm, I was talking to a good mate of mine today Jimmy Blackburn with whom I worked with at Smilers in the early 60s,And we just wondered how many of Smilers drivers are still about , Apart from him and I, It would be very nice to hear from anyone with some details Etc. Regards Larry & Jimmy.

Hi Larry Hope you have a bit more luck getting in touch with ex Smiler drivers, I remember The Bull calling in to see my Dad if he was in the vicinity of our yard.
Some photos of major road construction in the area, the two colour ones are from 1973 and are of the Central Motorway site, the other is the Felling By Pass, that is the Old Fold Pub which is still there.
Tyneside
A nice selection of old pics Tyneside, the Blackett St one and particularly Burton’s Tailors, I still recall going there late 60’s with my three best mates to order our first full Monty, couldn’t wait to collect them and get out on Friday night around the Toon. Three piece suit for just less than £20 and Ten Bob a week from my £3 19 Shillings Apprentice wage to pay it off. What great days and nights! Franky.

In the early 1960’s, I was working for Bill Robson at E Robson (Gateshead)Ltd, in Shieldfield as an apprentice. Ronnie Bright was the fitter/driver, Billy Scott (who lived in Hexham) was there, and IIRC, Dennis Cook. Great days!
Eric.
Ronnie Bright with the ex. Cawthorns Atki. Although the headboard is signwritten as E.Robson, the cab doors are in the name of T. Longhorn (Gateshead, Ltd.) IIRC Bill Robson bought an A Licence and possibly a Foden 8 wheeler (FMO 212) from Tommy Longhorn. I think driver Phil Proud came with it.
Eric.
Couple of pictures taken at Throckley.
