Leyland600:
Hi Larry you mentioned Anderson Boyes mining machinery Motherwell,I have on a couple of occasions loaded conveyor rollers and conveyor belt support stands (known as “Rope Belt” ) from Anderson Mavor in the Motherwell area possibly Holytown in the late 1960s to be taken to Distington Engineering Co at Workington who then supplied the various NCB regional stores with various items of mining machinery. I assume this was all the same company.
Cheers, Leyland 600
Hi Leyland, You may be correct in what you are naming the Co, I allways new them as Anderson Boyse Ltd , The man who will certainly know is Bumper, He drove for J.J.Brownlee Lts who did a lot of work for A/B, He was still there in 1973/4 , Before he moved on to drive for Van Hee, Im sure if he reads this he will be able to confirm what you are saying, Take care my friend & stay safe,Regards Larry.
If my memory is working correctly I think there was a scam going at the Dex Garage in the 1950s or 1960s where a customer would park a car while going to the theatre or cinema. While they were away the engine would be taken out and replaced with a worn-out engine while the removed engine was put in the other car and charged for as a recon engine.

Hi John Had not heard about that one but I can well imagine it happening !!!
Great photos Tyneside thank you for posting them, I liked the Morris & Jones one, A Bedford O Model 4 wheeler, I used to deliver food stuff to their Prudhoe Street warehouse in the 50/60s era .They had some of their motors advertising their Blackie Boy Tea Tips in those days, Of course that wouldnt be allowed these days , Keep this stuff coming It perks me up , , Stay safe , Regards Larry.
The photo of Carricks brought back a memory I heard several times over the years/
Just off Northumberland Street they had a cafe opposite Rosleighs the Rover/Jaguar showroom. It must have been about 1929-1930 when my dad then about 8 went was in Newcastle with my Grandfather & seeing a Rover in the showroom decided to buy it and a few shops along towards Northumberland Street was our Insurance Brokers (I think then Capstaffs eventually NorthernCounties Guaratee Co). He took my dad in with him t get an insurance Certificate for the car so he could have it taxed to travel home in.
The chap I knew who managed it was Harry Aitchison but i those days was just an office runner, but who ever my Grandfather dealt with said that as it would take about half an hour would my Grandfather & dad like to go over the road to Carricks for a coffee.
Coming from Spennymoor and leaving home after breakfast and if he was lucky getting dinner at noon or so witrh never a thought of stopping in between my Grandfather was taken back with the cafe full of men drinking coffee at about 10AM in the morning.’ ‘What are all these lot doing here ?’, he asked ‘Do they not work?’
Hi Carl, I remember the Carricks Cafe Its Was called Carricks Cottage Cafe, I used to eat there in 1949/50 When I went to Skerrys College in Ellison Place at the bottom end of Savile Row in Town, Carricks had a few cafes in Town in those days, All good food, Stay safe, Regards Larry.

I don’t know where they were going but I remember when I was young my Grandfather used to park round there. Was Edmunds Walker or Associated Engineering somewhere near there, because it would have been work related probably for spare parts?
He had sold the Rover he had & taken one in Part Exchange that was in pretty poor condition. Dad said they were lucky they got to Newcastle without breaking down and were walking past Rosleighs he had seen the Rover in the showroom window & said to my dad, we’ll go back in that. Dad said in the windscreen they had a big price tag & going in he said to the salesman How much do you want for the Rover? ’ ‘The price is in the windscreen sir’ I don’t want your telephone number how much do you want’ Eventually they came to an agreement over the price & then he asked how much you would they give for his Rover? Telling him they’d need to take it for a test drive my grandfather handed the keys & off the salesman went and he whispered to my dad I hope he makes it back. On return he handed over the cash for difference in price which was after he’d got the new car for about 75% of what they had it priced for and made a profit on the price he had paid for the one he;d taken in to them & said he’d nip next door for the insurance certificate & could they have it taxed & ready for him to take home and as by his word they took the new car home.
I started in haulage back in the early ‘70’s.Worked for a company called Taylor’s of Teesside.Moved on to David Fox,BICC,Carlisle Bros,Econofreight,Stockton Haulage,Dart, and Whitfields, all amongst the firms I worked for.Retired in 2019,and miss it all!The lads, the comradeship, the laughs and even the bloody hard work,at times! Love to hear from any drivers who knew of those companies I’ve mentioned.
Hi Castellon, I remember all these firms, I used to deliver soft drink stuff to David Fox,s depot on the Redcar trunk road, I loaded it at Dundee & Fox,s put it into containers for shipment via Teesport Terminal., IIRC The Fox Transport was started by a fellow who was Rankins traffic manager at the Teeside Depot, Rankins were a north east concern, With thier head office on Cut Bank in Newcastle, & Depots in Howard Street Liverpool, The Wynd Amble, A few of my pals drove for them in Newcastle in the 50/60s, Take care & stay safe, Regards Larry…

Bit of a long shot but can you remember Eddie Swales who ran livestock vehicles, think his yard was close to the cattle mart at Stockton.
I used to give return loads to Gurteens transport for a ridiculously low rate, it was £80 for 20 tons of steel punchings up to Stockton iirc, had to be an eight wheeler which restricted who could do it. Still find it hard to believe anyone would do it for that money tbh.

Tyneside
Hi Tyneside, I remember Swales just, almost. It seems as if another life now, but we still had one cattle truck until about 1956 when I was about 8 or 9 and I used to ask my dad when I went with him to Darlington & Sedgefield Marts in the cattle truck, who the other ones belonged to and the little bit I remember of Swales were (maybe it was just one) they seemed to have painted it with whatever paint they had as it was a patchwork of colours,
The bit I remember best of Darlington Mart was the canteen and getting nice beef sandwiches. As for Sedgefield I remember asking my dad a few months before he died where the Mart had been, as I had arrived early for a funeral & had a walk round whilst waiting & could see no evidence it ever had existed.

Hello Castellon, I started in haulage in 1968, (apprentice diesel fitter) I remember all the companies you mention apart from Taylors, what vehicles did they have and where were they based? Might jog my memory! I started at R. Milburn in Commercial Street by the way, you may remember them.
