Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Frankydobo:
Hi Franky
That could of been Eddy Welch, he drove for us for a number of years and I know he was working for Mole’s about that time.
If Sid Fisher is still around he will be into his 90’s, I last saw him about 30 years ago and he had been retired a while then but was driving the staff mini bus at the George Washington Hotel on a Friday & Saturday night.

That’s got to be the same Sid Fisher Tyneside, although my Father pass away in 2008 he would have been around 93/4 yrs old today. I recall Dad saying Sid had a bit of a stutter is that right, he was a good laugh too though apparently. Bowsden Tce must have been a good spot for starting off in transport, I had a look down there one day and there didn’t seem to be a lot of room.
Franky.

Hi Franky
Think we are talking about the same Sid, One thing always struck me he was always very dapper. When I last bumped into him we were just coming out of a wedding reception at the George Washington, it was nearly midnight on a Saturday and he was waiting to drive staff home, but he was still smartly Dressed with jacket and tie, different generation I suppose.
Tyneside

Larry the pic you put on of the Steenberg drivers may have been around the same time my Father was there, I certainly recall the faces and one or two names from when I used to go with him on trips. left to right is Bob Best, Jock Mundell not sure of the next two names and I believe the lad on the right kneeling was Jimmy Hepple who sadly died probably not many years after this photo was taken. I remember Dad was quite upset as he was a good mate and a lovely lad as he often said. The motor behind is a Seddon Diesel Mk15 tractor unit which came out late 50’s, this one looks like its done some work! Dad told me he drove one and said you could hold a dance in the cab ha, great photo. Cheers Franky.

That is a good looking Foden 8 wheeler Larry.

Lawrence Dunbar,
Good morning Larry.
Nice to see the pic: of the Scammel R8. My father drove one for P&P tpt: of Bridgend where he started after leaving the army at the end of the war. Not sure if it was new but I think I remember some mention of it being a few years old when he got it. He always loaded fruit from Covent Garden back to Bridgend. Apparently stallholders from the market in town and local shopkeepers would bring their carts to the yard and have their stuff off the back of the motor. Being born in 46 I was fortunate to have access to plenty of fresh fruit courtesy of the ’ old man ’ Thanks for the photo.
Regards and keep safe, Allan

Foden!! Proper motor for men Kev , a bit like Yorkie , not for girly types and they were lighter by a bit than other 8wheelers at the time . Poor cash strapped hauliers needed every penny towards their next new Jag you know .

Well as you all know my first wagon as an owner driver was a Foden, You could go up hill and down dale regardless of the steep hills, Foden 12 speed box with a gear for every hill, They earned a good living in those days, Of course fuel was only 23 Pence a gallon in 1972, I had my own tank in the yard I used at Seaton Burn that belonged to my cousins The Boistons, Plus they were Foden men right up till they finished trading, It was when they got involved with Pacca that I went off them, The good old days IMO, Regards Larry.

It ended up at Perth, Brian Patterson bought it, He bought a S 80 Cab from me & fitted to the very same, Also he fitted the steering colum & box of course off the S 80, Theres a lot off history on this Foden, Regards Larry.
