The two pics of the Ouseburn Mercury’s are driven by Bill Ashworth a long serving driver and parked up at the Quayside and outside his flat on the Longbenton Estate, which had only been built in the early 50’s, and the flats shown in the photo were built around the mid to late 50’s so quite new when the photo was taken. My Father at this time drove for Anthony Mole on tippers and was involved in the building of the flats, he got friendly with Bill, who lived a little further along the street than our house, and Bill put a word in for Dad to get a job at Ouseburn. The second pic 770 GTN was registered April to June 1959 and 724 RBB June to Oct 1961, only two years between these units but Bill would have got both of them from new. My Father said once that Bill always got the new motors as he was well regarded by the company. This sort of thing happened in other companies too, it didn’t go down too well in some though. My Father and Bill stayed lifelong friends up until both passed away in the mid 2000’s. Franky.I can remember Anthony mole was their place beside m-steel cycles at south Gosforth and not sure was it the workshop beside the Fenwick pit at east-holywell they all ways reminded
me of blacketts of palmasvile -
I’m sure the Seddon Atkinson 400 that Ian Thompson owns is ex Anthony Mole bought from Monte’s when they had the placr on the corner of Fencehouses/Woodstone village

Yes it was Bowsden Tce, Gosforth, then moved to Holywell although my Father had left before then, when at Mole’s he drove an O Series Bedford, no pics but the model below is a replica, colours were similar to Blacketts. Franky.
Can’t remember exactly when but Anthony Mole, along with John Scott & Sons got swallowed up by the Bowey empire. Ted Smith was the senior manager. Also in the office was Sid Fisher?? (lived at Washington) who I think had been a driver for John Scott and Barry Anderson. All the flat work that John Scott did seemed to gradually disappear but the tippers kept going under the Mole name and colours.
At that time they ran mostly Dodge four and six wheelers eventually moving over to Sed AK.
The wagons were operated from John Scott’s old yard off Breamish St. I think Bowey kept Bowsden Tce. as their main office as all the accounts had to go there.
We used to help each other out on a daily basis at busy times, we would sometimes have some of Moles on hire or they would have some of ours.
By the mid/ late eighties it all started to fall apart, I think Boweys wanted rid of the transport and Ted Smith had a falling out with them.
Two lads who I think were ex Boweys Construction started D&K Construction, Ted persuaded them some wagons would be a good idea and he ended up managing a small fleet of about eight or ten Sed Ak six wheel tippers for them. They eventually disappeared as well. Barry Anderson ended up at Owen Pugh’s.
Tyneside
Some good info Tyneside on the later history of Mole’s, there was a lad in the next street to ours in Fatfield possibly late 80’s who drove a Sed Aki tipper for Mole’s, just a white cab then but if I recall it had the maroon chassis, I’m guessing they didn’t last too long after as I never saw the motor after a while. My Father came from Washington and knew a Sid Fisher from his school days, this could have been him or his son maybe depending on age. Cheers Franky.
IIRC, The Bowey Group Ltd ran a few Spanish Dodges as well as their Sedakis, Also I think that Robsons of Slaley had two ex Bowey Sedakis which ran out of Moot Law Quarry in the early 90s. Regards Larry.

Hi, Tyneside I Think Murray Hogg Transport moved into Bowsden Terrace after Bowie moved out Also there was another old haulage firm there too Cazelly Bros Ltd. Who in later years moved to the Ind Est at Brunswick Village, They went on to Buy out Albert Blakes firm from Heaton, Their yard was next door to the Heaton & Stannington F.C., Albert Blake move to Malta when he sold out as far as I know, He did all the haulage work out of Cut Out Cartons Ltd in Byker who were later taken over by Fields at Killingworth, The made a lot of packaging for Procter & Gamble Ltd . Regards Larry.

I think Ian’s 400 came from Marsden freight. The 401 cab that’s on it now might have come from Monte though?

My Dad drove it in the 80’s it was a plain white day cab when Ian got it. Allen from coltons and me rode over to monte’s on our bikes to have a look at it before he picked it up. I thought the sleeper cab came from Ritchies but I’m not sure he did have another green cab from somewhere he used for bits it was in the top yard for a while
