Just a couple of lines to see if everyone is OK and not too stressed being hemmed in ,been of work since mid march and not much sign of going back, cleared out and tidied up the garage, done the garden, all the painting and odd jobs ,got to keep the darlin happy,
so just finding things to keep the grey matter stimulated ,
hopefully when this ends we can all catch up at the next drivers do ,so until then take care and look after yourselves as i think the rally situation this year is about stuffed ,keep posting and keep well ,Paul

Been off since DVLA took licence away in early January took a few week to get everything organised etc then made a list of everything I wanted / needed doing slowly working through that but all my hospital appointments have been cancelled until further notice

If can get this under control Vasovagal syncope which is probably causing all my problems

The old St Lawrence café on Newcastle quayside.

This picture brings back some good mems, The owner Jimmy Gallbraith a driver of course, He worked for Orrell & Brewster in the 50s, IIRC He won a few bob on the pools, His first cafe was called The Old Tunis Cafe it was located on Newcastle Quayside, He then moved to The New Tunis Cafe in the same area, He also had a Caravan Cafe opposite Spillers on the Quaydside, He then moved on to The St Lawrence Cafe on St Lawrence Road, This was a Haven for owner drivers plus drivers waiting to off load at Spillers :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: ,There was a few O/Ds For instance Albert Greenwood, Loftey Marshall, AKA The North Shields Miilionair,Along with Myself, Micky Findlay, Norman Barwick AKA The Big Yin. Kenny Norman,Peter Green, John Watson,Plus a few more that I cant bring to mind, Of course getting old as I am is just like forgetting to fill the old log sheets in. In the old days when I was just a new starter in the haulage game, Jimmys Cafe was where Haulage Cos, Rang when looking for drivers wanting return loads, Plus local work as well. The good old days in my book, Regards Larry.

When I was an Apprentice at Steenberg’s one of the drivers said to me ‘Howay we’ll nip down to Jimmy’s for a cuppa’ pointing to a D800 tractor unit, I was just about to get in and he said ‘Not in there your driving’ so I got in the drivers seat and about five more of them piled in the cab, I could hardly change gear along the Quayside for arms and legs but at least I got my tea and sarnie paid for! Yes it was a popular place, Peter Green you mentioned Larry drove for Ouseburn before he went O/D and later ended up at the MoT station at Sandy Lane, I never had a problem with a motor there when Peter examined it, smashing lad. Franky.

N ice to here from you Franky, Jimmys Cafe was one of the good ones, Peter Green was a very good pal of mine, & Like you said no probs at Sandy Lane with him, He was a true gent in my book, Sadley he passed away a few years ago, Regards Larry.

Spillers Mill during demolition. Not sure who the DAF belongs to.

Love the Hilman Minx’s colonial-looking sun-visor and the receding Standard 8. Would that be a Park Royal bodied AEC behind the post-war Guy?
