Hiya Larry now that is a tidy little Foden of Danbys so would it have had the 4LK or a 5LW and maybe it pulled a trailer so I could have got “H” a start as my trailer mate eh! Cheers Dennis.

Aye it is a tidy looking motor Dennis, Most likely it would have been The LW Range, I don’t think there would be many 10 studders with the LK in, Regards Larry.

Does anyone recognise the location of McPhees Atkinson. Looks to be parked on waste ground near drivers digs perhaps. I would suggest Arden House, Liverpool.
Cheers, Leyland 600

More demolition to make way for Washington New Town

Followed a low loader up from Chester-le-Street to Beamish on Thursday 31.8.16. carrying a Tarmac liveried, 8 legged, steam propelled motor (looks great, black with white or gold lettering?) tipper/rigid? Don’t know what the manufacturer is? Birmingham based.

So the last two wagon’s to mention are(second hand) an 8 wheeled Foden (bought from a coal haulier in North West Lancashire) and an 8 legged AEC Mammoth from a dealer in Kidderminster. The Foden was (we think) a “C” reg and the Mammoth a “K” reg? The Foden was bought without an offside main glass winded window (we thought this would be easy to replace) Many a draughty day for Ron would follow  (we could not find a replacement)
The Foden would throw up some problem’s. The tipping body was high and internally held (across it’s width) with chains. This was fine with hopper type loading but when loaded with a bucket the chains became engaged with the teethed bucket and pulled the two body sides together.
This flexing would put a strain on the body sides(requiring welding). The other main weakness was the transmission.
The short propeller shaft between the two rear axles would object to speeds of 50mph (many Hardy Spicer couplings were renewed).Ron would try to keep within this max speed but even then the vibration was enough to cause damage. Climbing the North incline of the “Times Inn” bank (into Seaham from Murton) the short propshaft decided “i’ve had enough” and gave out dramatically. The bit’s of shrapnel took out the brake actuators on the rear axle.Luckily one of "Thomas’ motor’s was close behind (driven by Nicky White) and he stopped to give Ron a tow off the bank and off the main road.
The end of J Paul and Son is close, but Ron would continue driving tipper’s for Thomas and Lincoln’s for a few years yet. More to come.
