That’s the one 600! I’m sure you changed down there more often than I did. In fact I thought for a moment it was known as Clifton Sawmill, but I think it was the Lowther Sawmill at Clifton.
I remember meeting a driver there who worked for Arthur Green of Silsden, he had a 2 pedal Beaver which he said was a great lorry to drive. I went to school with Arthur Green’s grandson Andy, who now takes a somewhat older Beaver around the shows.
John.
Hi John , Lowther Sawmill was beyond the south end of the village next door to Curly Cargill’s yard where Jenkinsons factory and plant is now situated.
I remember starting to climb that gradient up to Clifton one very cold morning with pure black ice everywhere, in the distance I could see my mate and another wagon stuck on that sharp click corner blocking the road completely, I stopped well back near the Wetheriggs road end and walked up to see what could be done taking my shovel with me. We managed to find some grit and consequently gritted the road but on attempting to walk back down to my wagon I slid all the way. I was only going as far as Melkinthorpe just past the sawmill as was my mate fellow haulier Sandy Masson with his AEC Marshall bulk blower, I had a Foden S80 bulk blower both loaded with hen meal for the large poultry farm at Melkinthorpe. When we eventually reached the farm gate but could not get into the lane as the sharp rise up from the road was sheer ice and despite repeated pleas to the farm manager for sand or grit in the past nothing ever happened. We told him this time “get some sand or your hens hunger” we knew he was desperate for the meal. He suggested shovelling hen meal from our wagons which we did and allowed us to proceed but the amount of meal wasted was considerable and costly, but this taught him a lesson and two days later when I went with another load there was a heap of gravel tipped near the gate.

Happy Birthday, Larry. from Eric.
Happy birthday Larry.
Well thanks to everyone for the birthday wishes, I had a great day Cruesing down the river Tyne on a sunday afternoon, My family gave me this treat, Newcastle Quayside to Tynemouth a 3 hr round trip, I had a few Perronis & a large bacon butty, Plus the boat had two 8LW Gardners in music to my ears, They never missed a beat, In the evening I had some nice Malts,
, Regards Larry.
Happy Birthday Larry, I did not know that you could still sail down the Tyne and back these days, I haven’t done that since I was a boy a about 65 years ago when the river was full of ships and shipyards almost the full length of the river. One thing for sure with two 8LW Gardners you would be guaranteed to get back to Newcastle Quay.
All the best Leyland 600

I was just thinking back to the early 1990s when Ronnie Linsley used to do a lot of work out of and shunting around Seaham Harbour with F88s and a D series unit and was wondering if he still does a lot at Seaham as i know they still have a wagon on the road a Volvo that pulls a Lowloader.
