Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Known as the DD8, I have a picture in a book of Athersmiths outfit SBU 738 pulling a Crane 8 Ton trailer at 32 Ton Gross, Gardner 6LX. Lovely sheeted load on both Wagon and Drag, could well be the one you mention Dennis, I’d put the pic on but no doubt it will contravene copyright. Cheers Franky.

hiya,
Didn’t Athersmith’s only have the one eight wheeled Seddon pulling that hefty trailer used to see it regularly it was a bit steady away always appeared well freighted and I have been behind it a time or two and given it my blessing, would be nice to see a pic though.
thanks harry long retired.

The reg of this one is 5614 SM. A Roger Kenney pic but not a good neg., very grainy.

Anyone know the location or haulier.

Hello All, First time here, and enjoyed the thread very much. I dont have a HGV, but used to drive a 7.5t Ford D-series early 70s, for Crossley BM at Birtley. Knew a few lads from Cawthorns as they were next door, Juice Bell, Johnny Forsyth, and of course Bri Robson, great lads all. Walking into work one morning saw Juice filling up, asked where he was off to today and the answer was “Local, just Marseille” always wished I could just skive off work and go with them lads. Usually Monday was a day off for them and a great time was had by all in Barley Mow Club, it was a privilige to have these lads as “drinking mates” great fun, but one day Johhny Forsyth had his overnight bag blown up by the Army, “someone” had informed the law that there was a suspicious bag lying in the foyer. Blew his socks and undies to bits I believe.
A company affiliated with Crossley was MT&E, [Middlesborough Transport and Engineering] first of the Boro, then Eaglescliffe. When I had my truck in for service, I used to get a ride back to Birtley from these lads, Volvo F88s with a Hulo crane, and rear Trackliner steering. Some of the lads there were real characters too. Frankie Brown, Hughie Gladstone, and of course Colin Lawrence. When I made Foreman and wasnt driving, I used to shunt the Trackliners around the Yard, thinking I was cool, Colin kept me in my place in no uncertain terms.
I worked there for over 20 years, saw Big Js Volvos, Bedfords, old CMC [Blue Circle Cement] KM Bedfords and the big Scammel 8 leggers, Alastair was the Star of that crowd, he and his brother too. Used to take a drive around Stanhope, and it was cool when one of the lads FLEW past but gave a flash and a thumbs up…
Happy Days, but I’ve taken up too much time, but as the man said, "I’ll be BACK!!]

Was up at van hee today and they are now finished (AGAIN) apparently starting back up in a few weeks time .

Heres a one for Harry. Regards Larry

Back again, with more memories. My late Uncle was Harry Wells, drove for just about everybody at one time or another. First memory as a boy of 6 or 7 was sitting in his Capstaff S Type Bedford. Used to travel with him and his oppo Joe Tunney when they drove for Harris Motor Services of Oldham. Used to carry Mars products. Got my FIRST galaxy bar from them. They used to run Bedford S model TK, and KM s over the years. It was through Uncle Harry I learned the Headlight code and some chat like Queens Park Rangers, [Strangers] which usually meant commisioners. I also learned that if you help a driver, eventually a driver will help you, which has proven itself to be true over the years for me.We used to go as a team from Birtley to Darlington, then one of them would pick up a second truck and on we’d go. Harry was a real chain smoker, lighting one off the other, and sometimes it was more foggy inside than outside. We used to stop at the cafe on the Stannage? and I used to sit and watch the boats on the resovoir opposite as I ate a sarnie. Loved it.
Next Dekka Mcardle, wondering if that is a cousin of mine from Barley Mow? Has a brother John and a sister Pat…going back many years but I know the family were in Aussie for some time, used to live on Pembroke Ave? if so I havent seen or heard of them for over forty maybe fifty years, hope he can get in touch.
Thanks for the welcome Kev…

Yes Nick I’m still parking the motor at Ritchies. (Counting down to retirement now). I know i’m wasting my time saying this as I never listened to the same advice, stay on the tools,
punching up and down the road is not the fun job it used to be. regards Kevmac47

something old……Me tipping in Luxembourg.
And somthing new……for when I am fit to go back to work…

Thanks Kev, great lads all. Sad to hear about Derek, though I knew Joe better.

Anybody out there got pics of Young’s of Chester le Street 4-D Trader with the winch, used for picking up Fordson tractors etc for service. I ask on behalf of my cousin in Aussie who used to work there. He Tells me Tudor Smith used to drive it.

Any pics of MTE/Crossley fleets?

I used to work for Wallsy’s meats, we used to have the sausage and pies trunked overnight by 8-legged Atkis. [There were great lads driving that as well, but I cant remember names.] The fun part was watching them trying to turn it around in a small space, but hey did, every day.

Cheers mate.

jimboUSA The few Cawthorn`s that are left now have a reunion roundabout now, still at the Barley Mow.
