Hi forster, I remember going there for spares, Old Joe in the stores in his brown smock & he allways had a tie on, Jimmy Shaw was the forman fitter, & IIRC Fred Jones worked there before becoming a owner driver He had a 8 Wheeler Atki & a Foden, Regards Larry.
Advert. for Baxterâs from around the mid 60âs. IIRC they had a Scammell Scarab on their fleet (maybe more than one)- or is my memory playing tricks?! Eric.

Your memory is for real âforsterâ They did in fact have two Mechanical Horse Scammells, JVK 44, & GPT 560, these were replaced with the Scarabs with diesel engines in 569 HBB,& I73 LVK, They used to load trailers at 17 shed with Danish Bacon & canned goods for the long distance units, Plus they delivered localy too, Good workhorses, The were eventualy replaced with more modern stuff as Baxter extended his fleet to keep up with the times, Then they sold out in 1967 to Bob Kinghorn who in time joined forces with Tony Waugh, Hence the new name Waugh Road Services Ltd, IIRC This firm was sold to a Deep Sea Container Co, And was then later back in the hands of Bob Kinghorn, Then Sheperds, & of course now Fergusons, all this started to take place in 1968/69, Regards Larry.

Thatâs right âbigal20â, He worked there twice, He was a bit naughty & Jonny Baxter wouldnât have it so he gave him his marching orders, This is when he went to Cawthorns IIRC, He then came back to Baxters after Bob Kinghorn took over the firm & built their new depot at Benton, I donât recall where he went after that & sadly his is no longer with us, Regards Larry.
while i was at cawthorns billys, mate davy burns from nelson village, where the laids live and some people have durgs and cats, went to benton newcastle breweries, now whether billy went as well i don,t know, another lad went from cawthorns ray ?, he had come to cawthorns from owen pugh the year before,

i am sure you are right carl, they were on railway street, they had an old yankee dodge for a recovery truck,i used to pass it every day on my motorbike on the way to a&g, two of my mates worked there, brian reay, and jackie earl. big al.
Hi bigal, They were on Railway Street then they moved to Lemington, The garage is now Asdas, Before that Nettos, I had a brand new Dodge JTN 222 D Tractor unit when I worked for Baxters, Stan Kenny was the forman fitter, The storeman was Called Les, Great lads to deal with, The Dodge tipper that we had came from their Fallon depot near Stirling,Les the storeman new their parts system like the back of his hand, You just told him what you wanted No looking for part numbers, And he returned to the counter and placed them in front of you, Allways correct, Happy days, Regards Larry.
Union trucks started off on Railway Street what was the former north eastern motors garage
Apologise for not getting back to Bigal and Kev for my query on Bill Luntley, it was sad to see the message from Ftroop that he had passed away last year, I hadnât heard anything, I recall someone saying he may have had a dicky heart a few years back. He was certainly a character and as some said mad as a hatter, I first came across him when I started at Alfie Ellis late 60âs with the other Fitters some may know, Ian Forrest, Dave Burns, Freddy Jones (Foreman) Tommy Hands and Old Roy Budd also a young time served lad Paul Sore, me and my two mates as apprenticeâs had many laughs and memories and were taught our skills by these knowledgeable and experienced blokes. I often worked with Bill so got to know him well before he departed Ellisâs this was after he turned an artic over during a road test, he could be a little wild when driving and he was still a young guy then so a volatile mix. He went to Waughâs after that and Ian would later join him when Ellis had wrapped up. It was many years later when I met him again at Fergusons when not long after he became Workshop Foreman there until I believe his retirement, it was nice to chat and remember old times. RIP Billy mate.
Franky.
