Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

I know Horns of Dunston have been mentioned on here before but I would like to see any photos you lads have of their motors. I worked for them for a number of years and they were great days. My father worked for old Alfie Horn in the late sixties, and my brother was a fitter for them in the seventies. Characters like Derek Barrass, Mick Tate, Davey Dove and The Monk made the job.

Hi Keithfgb, There is one of Horns drivers working Jakey Adams called Walter, I have asked him about photos but Im still waiting to here from him, Also can you remember Tommy Philips he went on to work for a firm at Birtley who ran yellow Mercs, I cant remember their name perhaps you can, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry, Tommy Phillips went to Ace at birtley until they finished. Seen him not long ago in Adams yard and he is on for Manns at Felling though he won’t tell his real age. Wally is still going strong on local and is well past his retirement . Davey Dove is running coaches in Sunderland . All my pics have got lost in transit and I would like to see some if anyone has any. I have to say it was one of the better jobs I’ve had,no one left the yard at night until the last motor was loaded and sheeted, then straight to the Excelsior for refreshment. As you say Larry, good days long gone.

Aye the good old days I used to see Tommy regular in Normans, Mind you it was allways full of us Geordies, Then down do the club on the opposite side of the A1,then to the old Fox then to the one down the alleyway from Normans The Feathers I think it was called, Loads of crumpet when it was the Ladies darts night,Didnt we all have exiting lives in those good old days, I think Tommy will be about 76, Regards Larry.

I only live a short distance in Fatfield from where Calders place was, hard to believe now there was a site there. A lad from Calders worked for a short time at Van Hee, nice lad too he used to make furniture from scrap wood he picked up here and there, telephone tables, cabinets etc all really well made. Can’t recall his name now, fair haired and quiet but really nice lad. My Father knew Calders well coming from Washington himself, sure he said it was a good place to work for. Franky.

Hello Keith, nice to see you back on here, (good pics) I got talking to a lad at the gym recently, his face was familiar but I couldn’t place him. It turns out he is a fitter at Scania, I will have met him there when I was an O/D. He was telling me he was also at Horn’s in Gateshead. His name is Ronny Clark. He also worked at Blue Circle at Byker. Regards Kev. PS. This retirement is the best job I ever had.

I can remember helping to load Lord Lambton’s cattle at the buildings that are now part of the Biddick Arts centre. We used to take a few load every spring up to the grass pasture on his estate at Wooler.
