Just found some old pictures of Barkers of Birtley the pictures were taken at Witton Truck show in 1991 the motors are a Maggie Deutz flat and a unit with what must have been nearly new Turbostar i think Barry Emery ended up with all three of them around 1994 so i guess thats when they packed in.

How times moves on i recall seeing a brand new Foden eight wheeler on j plate in 1991 that Humbles had just put on the road with a rock body this would by around the time lots of firms were running out of the dale taking rock to Hartlepool.
That might have been Brian Emerson or John Nodding,s driving it at that time, regards servo88

Aye, They had an office in London I used to get a return load from them regulary Mostley fruit off the docks for Newcastle fruit market, I recall on several occasions taking allday to get loaded & the setting off at 6 at night to be in the market A.S.A.P. Hard work in those days but the pay was good, Happy Long Gone days down the Smoke, Regards Larry.
Hi Larry, thats the way fruit haulage was carried out in those days, do you remember the fat copper who lived on whisky supplied by the fruit warehouse owners and chased you out of St Andrews St the moment you were eventually tipped to park up somewhere on Newcastle’s streets then had to walk back to collect your signed delivery notes ages after every box or bag had been tallied up. ■■
