Hi Larry, great photo,s can remember Smiles from way back, they used to run to Baulder Head reservoir, hauling out of Forsett quarry i think. Very smart motors and a catchy phrase. Did they do a bit for Slaters? regards servo88

Aye, they did a lot of Slaters Quarry work, Before Tilcon took over they had a few working out of Kirkwhelpington for some years they had a few Dodge 4 wheelers in Tilcons livery also. They had quite a few drivers that used to lodge at Catterick when they did the work from East Layton, Swale etc. The did have some drivers that lived there, I remember one lad called Tim he drove an 8 wheeler Atki tipper , These MK 5 AECs were Smilers they then repainted them in the Smiles for Miles colours, Its one of these that’s tipping at Gateshead Ready Mixed plant, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry keep them old photo,s coming, nice bit of nostalgia there. regards servo88

Im pleased you like them, The late Isaac Smiles was my great uncle, Most of the photos I have were passed on to me by his Grandaughter Diane Smiles, Heres one of his first ones, Regards Larry.

Hi Larry i wonder what the old,ns would say about the new wagon,s of today eh. No brakes, heaters, air con or power steering. In their day it was hard graft, sleep on the bonnet and suit case. Then do your repairs and service on top of a weeks work.regards servo88
