I called on my best mate today, Arthur Lowdon of G.Lowdon Seaton Burn, I lived at Seaton Burn before & during the war years, I spent a lot of time at his garage in those days going for carbide for the old mans pit lamp, the carbide I was once told when I first started driving for Baxters on the Quayside was stored at Steenburghs which I no doubt is true, Arthur has got some cracking photos from way back, SO im going to help him sort them out & put them on thiholmes thread, Regards Larry & Old Arthur, he was also a good pal of the late Parkey Denome, another one of my best mates from the 50s.

hi lawrence i cant think the name of the name of the old man that used to drive the clydsdale thats parked in lowdens garage before it was parked up the carbide you are on about used to come into gateshead wharfe on a ship called the hanelore we used to carry and store it for b o c birtley regards jimmy

Aye Jimmy, The Clydesdale is still behind the garage at Seaton Burn, the driver was the late Charlie Watson, you will probs no his son John,he used to drive for Norman Irvine until they packed in. Regards Larry

hiya,
Wouldn’t it be fun handing a young un a Scammel Handyman and tell him to do a shift with it, he would certainly be flummoxed if it was my motor and I’d phoned in a sickie, I always removed the gate I could cut a few corners without it but I’d bet they wouldn’t find first gear, but if they looked long and hard the gate and the fixing bolts would be rolling about in the passenger side footwell.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry you have been a naughty naughty boy in your day, but some of the youngns of today wouldnt no how to take the screws out never mind drive a Scammell, Cheers Larry.

it would be very interesting to see them trying to stop the old ■■■■■■■ a wet road with an empty trailer behind them . oh , and lets not forget calling the fitters out when they couldn’t find the dipstick or the oil filler . they wouldn’t be allowed to do it themselves , they haven’t been "trained " cheers , dave

My old man used to let me drive these things, (empty) when he worked for a large company out of Teesport, I always got to drive them back to the gatehouse when I went with him to Workington Steel. I somehow think the same would’nt happen today!!! I’d love have a drive of one now.
