Thirsk Truck Gathering.

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

very smart looking motor it is too

Davie

hiya,
C,W,M, was there any ancient vehicles at the Thirsk Truck Gathering I find
I can’t get interested in modern stuff it still being on the road I stopped
doing the Barnard Castle show because it was all new or recent motors I do
prefer wagons that I cut my teeth on.
thanks harry, long retired.

Probably all a bit new for you Harry, there was a 1944 AEC Matador next to us that was still used everday for logging apart from that an f86 and an Atky Borderer they were relatively new

hiya,
There you go then C,W,M, I did cut my teeth on one you mentioned an ex WW2
AEC Matador still plodding around Malaya in the mid 50s,I wouldn’t give the F86 a
glance but do have a soft spot for the Borderers I’ll just have to stick with the >>
Tyne Tees Run some great stuff in that one and very little new stuff.
thanks harry, long retired.

cattle wagon man:
Hi Harry,
Dont get all bullish just because theres not many “oldies” to see at some Shows,-
…but…here`s the Matador . :unamused: :unamused:

Cheers, cattle wagon man.

The little wooden shed you can see behind the AEC was their “sleeper cab” as the guy described it room for 5 and a solar panel on the front for the lights. Their 6wd ERF was very interesting as well being an ex army Bedford TM chassis with the ERF cab fitted, his 3rd homemade AWD ERF

Frankydobo:
Interesting tale Tyneside, my old man worked for Moles in the Fifties/Sixties, we lived in the newish Longbenton Estate at the time and some new flats were being built and Dad was involved with his A Mole O Series Bedford tipper, one day after clearing an area, Dad spotted a Dried Milk container, remember the big tins about 10in high. Anyway he pulled it free and looking inside it was full of Bank Notes, he showed this to the digger driver and his mate on the same job, so the digger lad dug around a bit more and another tin appeared, again full of pound notes.
Being honest, conscientious working men they immediately tipped the money out and shared it amongst the three of them! Due to that we were the first to have a telly in our street and the kids from either side of our house used to come and watch the kids programmes, Champion the Wonder Horse, Four Feather Falls, Cannonball Express etc, good old Dad!

When at Van Hee I delivered cement to the Metro Centre during its build and one load was for a rebuild, if I remember rightly the original cement was dodgy or something and the building had to be done again, the Foreman was telling me about the difficulty they had building on the site, I’ve never been back to the place since, fortunately my Mrs isn’t keen on it either. Cheers Franky.

Hi Franky
Bet your Dad thought all his birthdays had come at once when he found those tins !! We were on a job in the old Durham prison when the JCB unearthed the end of a wooden box. There was a skelton inside. One of the of the prison warders had a look at the nearby brick wall, found a marked brick which was loosened out and behind that was a little plaque with the name and details of man who had been buried there. Turned out he was a murderer who had been hung in the prison. Apparently the body of a convicted and executed man had to be buried in the confines of the prison.

Changing the subject, from it’s opening the Metro Centre had several gauges attached to the outer walls to measure the subsidence. Got talking to one of the surveyors on site one day. We were standing on the levelled ground roughly where Toys r Us and other retail units are. He told me we were standing BELOW the water level of the river further over. Perhaps that’s why most of those units have had new floors put in.

PS you forgot the Lone Ranger and Highway Patrol. Hi Ho Silver - 10-4 over and out Tyneside

Ha ha, cheers Tyneside, I didn’t forget the others just thought I might end up with too long a list! Those were great programmes eh, we always remember when Highway Patrol first started when I get together with my Brothers, we sat for ages waiting for it to start. Another mention of the Moles Bedford, Dad was doing some work opposite the school we went to, my older Brother was in class when the female Teacher said ‘Oh look at that lorry’.
The kids all went to the window and saw the little tipper sitting up on its back end, the earth had stuck inside the body when tipping. The Teacher said ‘I hope the drivers alright’ and my Brother said ‘Aye, its me Fatha’! The digger managed to get it down again ok but Dad said it was a strange feeling. On another occasion my Oldest Brother was with him when the nearside hub bearing went and the wheels ended up running on the pavement in Gosforth High St, how they never hit anybody is anyone’s guess, certainly kept you on your toes that little motor!
Cheers Franky.

J R Adams

If I remember correctly Craggsy drove this 6 wheel Marshall for Jakey Adams, It looks like its loaded with bales of Danish Bacon from 17 shed on the Quayside, They had a few of these motors B reg,s, They could run at 24T Gross, Which in fact made the old 8 leggers redundant, Cheaper road tax & a better payload, The late Jo Bell & Big John Mackenna also drove them, , I was speaking to Craggsy on the phone last week he is still going strong & will be 80 in October, Regards Larry.

I remember seeing those Marshalls along the Quayside in the mid 60s through to 1970 etc at 17 shed and frequently tangled with some of the awkward zbs that worked at 22 Shed where I often delivered Marchon chemicals in drums and bags for Denmark etc. The shed foreman would have won a prize for being the most awkward zb
Cheers, Leyland 600
