hiya,
In the early 70s when working for Glendenning’s I ran to London with a load of
Volkswagen campers which I picked up ready loaded in Shotley depot the load
was addressed to a multi-story car park in I think Chelsea, meanwhile another
driver (Bobby Dodds) was loading an identical load at North or South Shields not
sure which, we arranged to meet at Norman’s, Bobby arrived a little while later
than me and had hit something en-route the front camper was minus it’s wind
screen and the roof was pushed down to a slot, we got to the unloading point
and tipped mine first then when we got to the last one on Bobby’s trailer I went
to the security mans kiosk and got his back turned while Bobby drove the last
one up the ramp and parked up, we both came away with clear signatures and
off to Oxford to load Marina’s back home.
I often wondered did Bobby hear any more about the damaged motor, I left
Glenny’s soon after that and have never seen Bobby since, if you post or look in
on here mate let me know if you got away with it or not, I’d love to know.
thanks harry, long retired.
harry ive just spoke to bobby on the phone and hes going to join and tell u the tale

There was an H L Walker at Thornaby,my next door neighbour drove for them, but all i ever saw where artics carrying steel, liveried as H L Walker, bright red as i recall(mind,i was only a bairn then)the yard was next to the old swimming baths, and,im not sure on this, but i think the "Walker person"built a factory on the site of the ASDA store at Portrack to build Walker Trailers, because by this time i was driving and delivered steel there on more than one occasion.
Aye Joe i think your right,i remember taking road springs to them at Thornaby but its a long time back,Mizzo will have the answers on this one for sure.vic.
Hiya Vic, Can’t help too much but Walkers were based in Robert Street, Thornaby, (just by the Town Hall) as Larry says they were taken over by S.O.M, and as Larry says they (S.O.M) moved to a new depot on Portrack Lane (Where B+Q is now). Yes Walker trailers were roughly where ASDA is now but I don’t know if it is the same Walker. We had Walker trailers at Milburns where I was an apprentice, they had the tail-end shaped in a large ‘W’, not sure about the quality though! As an aside one of my cousins husband worked for S.O.M for many years but I have lost touch with them now. Hope you are keeping well, Regards, Mizzo.

hiya,
Hello Jasper thanks for that, is Bobby still working ■■, it’s plagued me for
years wondering did he get away with it, I think Bobby was a bit like me
not at all into the car transporting, we was just unfortunate our motors
being fitted with PTOs so able to work the hydraulics on the car trailers I
was never given any instruction it was assumed I’d know how to go on, in
truth I hated the car job and was more at home on the general haulage
side of things, anyway hope to hear from Bobby soon.
thanks harry, long retired.

Whilst ‘Surfing the net’ today, I see that long established company Simpson Bros (Tyneside)Ltd has a winding up petition, filed on 24th. May. I can remember their fleet of Seddon 4 wheelers (many moons ago) Sad to see another haulage company finish.
And this is some of them from the earley days, Sad that another long standing family firm has hit hard times, Regards Larry.
In the photo the two brothers & the Late Maurice Taylor in the middle, Regards Larry.

Paul Davies Corbridge from Mitch Nattress
Great to see the Paul Davies fleet. Drove for him fresh from my test, had the 6 wheeled f86 as my first motor, was a flat when i had it on mixed local and distance work. Got the f10 next on block work out of swinburne quarry. Then on to the 112 on long distance brick work for steetley then cazaly bros. left after 2yrs but went back 2yrs later and drove the man for year before leaving for oz. Happy days. Mick V64
