Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

hows them new trailers working out at elddis kenny,

Some great pic’s all.I like that BRS International Paints.
Here’s an old cutting out of the 1995 Motor Transport.Prestons of Potto’s answer to the 1957 Suez crisis.
Any of you remember seeing it operating.
I wonder if anymore steamers were fired up to get round that crisis.
Mike.

Elders walker & co gateshead anyone any info on this company

Is this any help, Regards Larry.

Hi Lawrence, I remember Elders Walker Glass suppliers way back in the early 1950s as a boy riding shotgun in a Morris Commercial LC wagon owned by J.W. Colpitts, ship repairers of Blyth. Regularly this wagon or their Morris J. Type van would go to Elders, North Shields branch where glass pre-cut to order was collected for fitting into ships portlights that had been broken during stormy voyages etc, These glass discs were about 1 inch thick and various diameters were clamped over a large barrel where the operative pulled a lever down onto the scored glass rather like a morticing chisel gradualy paring off pieces of glass until the marked out diameter was reached. These pieces of glass were quite heavy. Larger rectangular pieces were also collected for ships bridge windows etc.
Hope this helps. Cheers, Leyland 600.

Your correct Bumper Curries did do the haulage for N & L, this other photo of Curries has one of the same driver on it, Regards Larry.

Hi Marcus, An AEC Regent MkIII with Northern Coachbuilders body built on Claremont Rd in this photo, at this time many of Newcastle Corporation Transport buses and trolleybuses carried a circular advert on their rear offside staircase corner panel advertising Beavans shop shown in this photo. I guess this photo dates from the mid 1950s.
Cheers Leyland 600.
