I also did a few months in Steels driving an old Merc, with the full size sleeper cab, for Fergys in 87. Was really put out when Bob Brown told me I had to move onto Ronnie Crosby`s MAN when he left. It was one cushy number usually potted about the yard loading trs.The only time I went out it was only as far as M/bro and back. Which with that beast was far enough, the steering was all over the place, though according to the foreman fitter there was nothing wrong with it.

Talking of Ronnie Crosby reminds me of another local firm that’s never had a mention on here - Instrip Demolition from Washington. I don’t think they’re still going. Ronnie used to drive the big F10 for them pulling a low loader and a tipper. When I was on for Alex Smiles we used to do work for them, notably when they were pulling down the Prince of Wales colliery at Pontefract.

Just noticed we made 200 pages, not bad eh, we’ll be catching Bubbleman up soon!!!

Hi Brian…Ronnie hadnt had the F10 long when Tony, one of the subbies for fergy, was passing Ronnie on the Western bypass. A piece of steel flange fell off Tonys load of H Marsh steel. It bounced up and somehow managed to take out Ronnies hydraulic pressure pipe to the lowloader. The pipe end flayed about and took out the back cab window and sprayed oil all over Ronnie and the inside of the cab. Believe Ronnie must be retired by now though have often seen a Instrip van outside his house when Ive been past that way. Used to be a concrete products firm at Roker Ave, Tyzacks I think. A lad I worked with at Lowes fruiters drove for them, they had D series Fords, which I got to drive when I was out with him. Another concrete firm was Taylor Woodrow, I think again, who I beleive were where Homeworthys factory is or was.

Samuel Tyzack, thats a blast from the past, I used to take Whindust from Kirkwhelpington (Tilcons Quarry run by the late Bobby Kell) into there in the 60s, They also ran some of their own motors 8 wheeler tippers, in fact Im sure they ran a night shift in the late 50s from Barrasford Quarry, ■■?, Regards Larry.
