Lawrence Dunbar:
0Woods of Blyth, Lance & Harry Wood, They also had a pop factory, They hauled sand from Cresswell Beach, & supplied Schools, Bowling Greens , Golf Courses, & R.M.C.Plants, plus some pidgeon men at South Shields with selected grit that was carefully removed from the beach at Hemscott Hill Cresswell, The loading shovel driver who if I may say so knew the beach & the tides like the back of his hand, was the late John Falloon from Blyth, he worked for Woods for a long time . He was kept in employment when Northern Aggregates took Woods over in the 70/80s, He was a key feature in the removal of the sand from the beaches at Hemscott Hill, & Blakemoor Burn, both at Cresswell, We did quite of lot of work for NAG, But like everything else to do with a good job they try to get the work done cheaper, So it was bye bye Nag, & RMC. Regards Larry. PS This was our Dodge loading at Blakemoor.

Larry, was there a Johnny Falloon that used to drive for R Binks in the 80’s,
I used load all of the local lads and that name rings a bell for Binks.
Regards Davey …

Aye, that was the late J/Fs son he was at Binksies when we were working off the beach at Cresswell, I think he went on to the Ringtread Tyre side of Binksies, Regards Larry.

Really sad news Mark, I hadn’t seen Billy for quite a few years but he will always be remembered as a quiet spoken, polite and friendly lad. I first got to know him when he worked for Elddis Caravans in the seventies. He will be sadly missed. R.I.P. Billy.

hiya,
The last time I was with Billy was it at Leamington Spa?? where the caravan
chassis where manufactured, I was on for Cookies and in there to pick a load
of chassis up for Elddis at Delves Lane, the place where we loaded was a place
Billy went into regularly and he was allowed to use a fully furnished flat within
the factory to overnight in so that was one of the rare occasions I never used
the digs well you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth do you.
Very nice lad was Billy RIP.
thanks harry, long retired.

I chatted with Dave Angus who is the local historian on Seaham area. He has loads of photos of old vehicles on his site.SHEW trucks (Seaham Harbour Engine Works) were built in seaham in 1903 .Then they built cars in 1907 the only known survivor is now in Beamish it was refurbished in the 60,s and done the London toBrighton run the car was too heavy so it was never a goer. In 1910 the company tried again with a 2 ton truck which was built for a firm called COALITE based in London it was a 4 wheeler but articulated behind the front axle these were never sold to anyone else photographs can be seen on Daves site at WWW.east-durham.co.uk if you scroll down the index past all the local sites you find transport tap on and you get photos and some info on the SHEW and photos of other old vehicles hope this is of interest to the readers cheers JEFF now retired.

Hi Larry, my name is Tony Falloon, my Father, John Falloon was the digger driver you mention. As a school boy I was often on the beach with my Dad and can remember you coming in to be loaded. My Dad worked for Woody’s from 1965 as a driver, his first wagon was a Dodge 300 series, 6 wheeler reg number GTY727D. I would love to see any photographs of any of Woody’s wagons if any of the readers come across any? Thanks for sharing your photos, brings back great memories.
