Old North East haulage companies (Part 1)

Hi Alan cheers for that. When last saw him at his mams funeral he was working for New Holland my dad said he had moved jobs since hadnt realised it was for Colton.Passed you early on Tues morn when you were coming down bank from Batleys about 4am. Gaz

These shots were taken by Gil Carlisle, he tells me they were taken at Pickering about 1991.

Here’s a well known face to many “old’uns” Sid Hewson drove that tanker for Onward on the Castrol contract at Birtley until the depot closed in 1992. I bet Crowbar recognizes him. I wonder if he’s still around? Great workmate, his brother Joe was also well known. Regards Kev.

Ste Burrow:
Does any one remember a firm called Wallace Transport from Stockton? They worked for Bowater-Scott and had some DAF’s. My great uncle worked for a firm who I think was taken over by Wallace. The only photo I have is of these two DAF’s (a 2800 and 2500) in the background. That by the way is me sat in my dad’s ERF about 25 years ago!! This was taken at Bowater-Scott’s yard at Hinkley.

I remember a firm called Wallace Transport who worked out of the old Cork Insulation Factory in Stockton.in the late 60’s. I think they used to be Frank Harrison Transport of Kirby Lonsdale (?). I remember them running a Seddon and Commers and they used an old Thames Trader as a yard shunter.

hi harry,

thats the ones harry they are still going but not as big as they used to be, they have quite a few old motors which they still do the shows with, their yard was on the opposite side to where the shop was on the main drag.
