0I know this is not a Hull motor, but do any of you Hull lads remember Barrow Heppburn Hide & Skin Dealers from Beverley, well this was one of their motors which I bought from Lex Tillotsons Hull. Regards Larry.
Barrow Hepburn and Gale were leather manufacturers from Bermondsey who took over Hodgsons Tannery in Beverley in the 1920’s and closed it in 1978 leaving Hodgson Chemicals until its demise in the 90’s

Me dad used to work for Cornelius parishes on Hessle road as the service manager in the 70’s they built a show trailer for Barrow Hepburn to tour the leatherware exibitions Built by the body shop, Barnaby’s motor bodies on Skullcoat lane. The tractor that pulled it was a long wheelbase mastiff or reiver (or simiar) custom painted with a 24kva gen set sat on the back. The trailer was an exibition and hospitality unit, at the time it something of one-off, ahead of its time, full of expensive top end shoes and handbags, but nowt like today F1 style trailers. Although it was special, I’ve never seen any photos of it since
Tony Wilson’s Reader Leyland Octopus started life as an Esso tanker, was bought and shortened into a wrecker by the garage in Hedon road by the Humber tidall estuary company. When the garage closed before the road was altered (big roundabout there now) Tony bought the Leyland and rebuilt it as you see today. His dad used to drive one just like it for Readers.
Regards Tony H.

Havn’t been through Beverly (the town) for years, has Hodgsons packed up then, we used to load out of there on Exel/Tankfrieght, backed in off the road near some railway lines IIRC.

Hodgsons was closed about 6-7 years ago. It’s now flattened and going to be shops, cinema and houses.
I use to know a few of the tankfrieght drivers they use to run out of ECC at Beverley. I use to get on with Dave Smith and Jim out of your office at Immingham.
I last saw Jim at Whitehaven, I was washing out there and he came for a chat.
I worked for F.Short & Sons Newcastle, & they had a depot in Oxford Street Hull, they did a lot of MT Drums from the North East to a firm Ken Rooms in Hull I wonder if they are still going, Regards Larry.

Yes Ken Rooms are still around, or they were when I worked for my Brother. Drums and IBC now
Chris Webb:
I remember John Foremans when they were running out of BP at Saltend,F86s I think and I was in an AEC MK3 or a MK5 if you were lucky.
I worked for A.E.Evans Sheffield depot and we had a Hull based driver called Kenny Vint working out of BP and Amoco at Easington North Sea Gas terminals. He had an accident somewhere near Patrington, the Mandator and 6000 galls of gas condensate overturned, caught fire, killing Ken.I’d left Evans then but I think it was around 1979/80 when this happened. An old pal of mine,ex Evans, sent me these photos of the AEC and trailer when it was in Foremans’ yard.
It was on this bend where the wagon went over. That’s my mates’ Buffalo in the lay-by and the wagon finished up in that field.
Kenny drove for another company out of Saltend before he worked for Evans, maybe Harold Wood,I’m not sure.He was a great bloke and was sadly missed by the lads that knew him.I do recall he was ex Royal Navy or Merchant Navy as he used to take the p*** out of me,being ex RAF .
HI Chris, You are correct Kenny Vint was a workmate of my dad Stan Rennison at Harold Woods, I remember him being very upset at the time, also there were a couple of other tanker drivers from Hull killed, i will have to ask my younger brother about them , I think one was Jack Howell,
Jimmy Miller had a big accident near Boroughbridge and luckily survived.
cheers
Paul
Wheel Nut:
I just had to move this one back to its rightful home.
Link Road Transport was lost in a Welsh thread
Hullo Malcolm,
Q. Where abouts was he lost in Wales.? A. In a Bogg
Cheers, Archie.
Well found Malcolm, I wondered if anyone would come up with some Link pictures - those new F10’s were smart vehicles. My Uncle, George Graves (RIP) drove for them for many years until he retired, starting off on Stirk Bros -Later Geo Bogg transport, the fish hauliers on the dock. He got the first F10 John Bogg bought - WRH172S, (I think it was direct from the Commercial Vehicle show) and kept it in immaculate condition, his brother Terry now ret’d also drove for them.
I did some relief work for them in about 1983 and drove the same wagon for a while before going on to one of the big Iveco’s they had
This was after Rapid Transport, the business I bought from Ron Fletcher using my Tolemans redundancy money (that’s another story), went under thanks to the restrictive practices on Hull docks,
I had a T reg 1619 Merc on contract with IFF - always seemed to get the heaviest loads - the old bus sounded like a bag of spanners but went well enough, (Dave Riby had a LHD Mack on the same job and used to do 3 Scotch to my 2) and a TK Bedford rigid that I used to transport cabins for Redispace plus a couple of trailers rented to IBC. My part time fitter was a retired ex MAT chap called Harold Lowe, a diamond of a bloke and one of the best fitters I’ve ever known. We used Ron’s yard on Dunswell lane next door to J.E.S Tutty.
A pal of mine Chris Normington drove the Merc for me while I drove the TK and tried to gain more business, Chris went on to drive for Nippress, and now Wincanton on the Air Products contract out of Saltend,
I went to work for Engineering & Welding Supplies Ltd in Westmorland St,
in 1985 as transport supervisor and still within the group.

I think we must have crossed paths at some time, either at Slipper Bridge Works or around the docks. I am guessing you knew Barry Craven who had the two D Series Ford units on IFF. Barry drove one, Colin drove the other. I did a lot of work with Peter Massey. Peter Thompson and worked on Alan Darvills boat.
Even EngWeld had a place in my life as we got all our welding gear from them and had a gas delivery every week, they were using an A series ERF at the time
