Hullo “mat man”,
Yes of course Stan Whitton, with his passion for American Cars. And also his brother Les Whitton, I brought him back home when his Volve packed in in Turin. Johnny Mann was the top fitter in those days, (under Clarky of course) and he took him back out to collect it. Poor old Les, he wound up with some sort of nervous desease and had to pack in soon after.
Cheers, Archie.

JOHN

arhie paice. stan never liked water we would be in dalmine steel works in italy red hot stripping roofs out to load pipes when finshed ask him r u going for a shower. he would say no have one later. he never did.

Hullo “mat man”,
Yes, r u going for a shower .no i will have one later. he never did. That’s because he came from Castleford, they were Crap at Rugby as well.
By the way when I was on with them they only had two Volvos, they were from Frigo MAT, there was an F89 that Paula used to drive and an F88 that Len Terry the shop Steward used to drive, all the rest were non sleeper 110 Scanias. They eventually converted one Scania to a sleeper, Johnny Southern got that. The depot at Abbingdon has Scammel Crusaders, but only because they were forced to, to keep the British Leyland contract going.
I was quite lucky as I was the subbie, I had my full sleeper cab 111.
Cheers, Archie.

Hullo “mat man”,
No sorry, I’ve never heard of Brian Cobb. Colin Ewan was doing Middle East for Whittles then came onto MAT as a Subbie, two years later I left MAT and went onto Whittles. Colin had a DAF 2800dks, then bought a new Volvo, I as I said before had a Scania LBS 111.
Cheers, Archie.

Your MAT mate Paul works for Tony Ogden, he learned his trade with Clarky, and that F12 and Arthur will go on forever I hope. He must be getting on a bit though because Chris is my age I think.

I think Chris(Webb) mentioned the Reader Brothers early in this thread,Heres one or two pictures.

John

Great pictures John,I remember them well, they used to pull Dutch trailers off the docks into Humber Street (I think) and I used to help meself to boxes of lettuce for Sheffield market.when it was windy you’d all on keeping them on the trailer

Agreed Chris. Absolutely fabulous story and pictures and still on the go today in a different form. Those pictures are worth a fortune to a transport historian in Hull Transport Museum.

Thanks John

Hey up Chris your not on this picture are you helping yourself
The articles about The Reader Bros I found in Bob Tucks book (A Road Transport Heritage vol 111) good read mainly companies from the East side right up to the Northeast of England

Hi mat man, Brian worked for Chet Trux out of Ostende or Zeebrugge doing Middle East in the early seventies in a Spanish Pagaso and here he is in the mid seventies driving this. The last time I saw him he lived in a pub which was owned by Bill Bentley whenever he was back in the U.K., this was in the early eighties just before he moved to Bridlington.
For some reason I always thought that this photo was taken in Hull on the way to King Georges Dock ? to catch The North Sea Ferry but I can’t remember what looks like a tall building faintly in the back ground. Maybe Malc or Archie might recognise this bridge.

Hullo Steve,
That’s a good picture of an old Transcon mate. but I don’t think that bridge is in Hull though. There are two bridges, North Bridge and Drypool Bridge, over the river Hull. Both of them are very similar to that one, but the background, the street lamps and buildings just don’t jog any memories at all. I think it is probably over nearer to you somewhere. Good to see you got back to Oz safe and well. No Worries eh ?
Cheers, Archie.

Eyup John,a bit before my time pal,1969 I was on that job.The trailer would be dropped in the street and you took what was yours, there would be maybe another two blokes loading as well. There’s a restored Leyland Octopus in Readers livery somewhere.
Is that Key Warehousing and Transport premises in the second photo,if so they ran a biggish fleet,Scammells particularly I remember.

Stanfield:
