hey what about us down in the smoke.
Atlas transport and shipping in Battersea they bought out Amesbury transport and about 3 years later moved all operations to amesbury but closed down in the late 90s.Had my first driving job at Atlas a year old f7 the one with the cab known as the cab of 4.Then a new FL7 and when that was off road i had their pride and joy a spotless F88 with a fold down bed and when it wasnt being used they fitted a weight and a long bar on the fith wheel and used it forr brake downs.
Goodmans transport in Wandsworth closed down all transport around the same time but are still running a large workshop. They used to run bedfords then daf 1900 ridge’s.This july they celabrating their 100th year
C.Barber in mitcham closed down in mid 90s.Still see one of their old scammell 8 leggers powder blowers now and then. One of the last scania’s is dumped in a old sand pit in Croydon.well the cab is anyway

hiya,
Very interesting stuff there Russell have you any info on Jack’s Motors I know your
old firm “Gillies” took them over and I actually did about a month for them in the
60s a little four wheeled ERF with a 4 pot Gardner in it on the hydrodgen peroxide
round all the hairdressers, when did they finish ■■ didn’t Gilbraiths keep the name
going for a while after the Blackburn depot shut down, they was all canny lads and
the bosses were good to work for it was just not my type of work, and didn’t they
only ever run rigid ERF’s can never remember seeing any artics, they had a lot of
“long term” drivers some of them “as old as tea”.
thanks harry, long retired.
Hi Harry,
My old man worked for Jacks at one time and I seem to recall they had a couple of Guy artics in a white livery of Laporte Chemicals (I would love to see a pic of one of them) which I think they ran to/from Luton. Memory is vague, but it was in the late 50’s early 60’s.
I recall that in 69/70 I used to stay at the Three Sisters cafe on the old A5 south of Markyate regular and there was one of Jacks that did the same, can’t just remember for definite but I think he was called Garry/Gaz,drove one of their ERF 4 wheelers always had plenty to say for himself but a good craic all the same.Cheers Bewick.

Here`s a scan of a motor from Gobowen anything to do with all this ?.Oh what a neat little Mickey. That looks like them with a load of tinplate. I used to do lots of that stuff from Velindre, maybe I did use them. Although they weren’t the only hauliers backloading from there.
Salut, David.
dafdave
There was a firm in morriston[[swansea]] i used to load out of velindre for when i worked for fred snaylam in the early 80s.For the life of me i cant think of the name, any ideas?
Regards Dave
Don’t remember the name Dave, but I’m sure I must have used them. Did
loads out of there, it was a pain, wait half the night in that big shed then
suddenly a crane pops up and in 2 minutes you’re loaded .
I used to frequent some good digs nearby and one day booked myself in
before going to load. I didn’t come out roped and sheeted 'till about 2 in the
morning so just started off up the road. Never had the nerve to face that
landlady again

Your right about Bridges, they did get taken over by B.R.S and later became Lynxs they moved to Leyland just off Golden Hill lane in the late 70’s in the same Ind Est as Cannings. My parents had one of the off licence/grocers on Inkerman St and we were consantly being chased away from the yard at eldon st by the drivers, it was a great place to play. My ex wife’s Dad used to work there and went with them to Leyland as BRS. But was made redundant and then went to work for Parcel force nagain in the same Ind Est, didn’t like to go to far away from where he started out . Sadly he has now passed away but we used to have some great conversations about Bridges it used to be an institution in Preston.
Have you read Harold Bridges’ autobiography? I found it very compelling

J&E Transport- Haslingden & Dundee , AEC vans & flats part of Scottish BRS. Their depot is now apartments
Bengal Transport-Manchester, AEC Mercury dropsides
Whiteoak Transport -Colne, Fiats & Fords with hanging beef out of Borthwicks at Colne
Stringfellows-Shuttleworth and later Heywood Ind Estate, seemed to stick with Leylands to the death, last saw them with a Roadtrain on nights several years back.
A name I cant remember is the company at Ramsbottom that became Inter County Express and was taken over by TNT. They seemed to specialise in running to the South West with ERF 4 wheelers

James Shepherd [Hebden Bridge]
Greenroyd Transport [Todmorden]
J.Grindrod & Son [Littleborough]
Clegg Transport [Rochdale]Norman Jowett
Pendle Haulage
J.A.L Transport
all part of Jowetts in the 50s/60sHoyles of Todmorden
Jowett also owned Turners coaches on Halifax road and a lorry firm near Ripponden.
J.A.L was leach of Littleborough and Jowett took it over.
I did a night, day, night shift for Norman Jowett in 1963 but was so tired after 40 hours without sleep I told him, relation or not he can stick his job. Mick Jowett is still around in Todmorden and Kieth is somewhere in the far East, the yard is now a housing estate.A good mate of mine drove for Jimmy Shepard and eventually managed his Luton depot, he had also driven for Jowett and Temperly’s pipe works.
his last job before he retired at 72 was with Peter Smith at Worsthorne.Do you remember Ratcliffe of Littleborough with a fleet of Commers?
Hoyle died a few years ago but had not run lorries for years, he had a van conversion and sales near the old Todmorden bus garage and has some nice photos of his fleet on the wall of his office.
Two more small Todmorden hauliers were Stan Greenwood on Waterside and Bracewells Square garage. You may remember some of the lorries in the photos below dave.
Do you remember any of the drivers below? Most long gone.
Good days before all the H&s crap and digi tachos etc.
Russell.
Didn’t know Hoyles were in Haulage.Dennis Hoyle was a nice chap and the dealings I had with him were honest and really good.I bought a few ex B.T.vehicles from him and they were always right.Cambelts changed whatever the age or mileage.Couldn’t talk more highly of him and Beverley

Hows about Ironfield of Accrington, Jacks Motors ( still listed on the books of Gilbraith Tankers) Harolds Motors Blackburn, Hopwoods of Rishton, Norman Jowett Todmorden, Pendle Haulage, Ratcliffes of Littleborough, Willam Burrell Littleborough, Scholdfied Accrington (ran out of Shotton steel with old 8 leg Leylands, Maudsley of Blackburn, ran Maudsleys ( I think) and being a tankerman , RTS Runcorn, Reliance Manchester, John Foreman, Bulk of Paul Hull. Catchpole Ellesemere Port. most others have already been listed, but did anybody remember Yiddle Davis, one of our drivers did for him and told us he could make a corkscrew look straight, his words not mine.

Ah yes - Ironfield’s became Richmond Distribution before going bust, Schofield sold out to Wilfred Holden (are Mc Murrays still operating from Schofield’s yard in Ossy?), RTS disappeared into TDG, John Forman into P&O Roadtanks and Reliance into United with Ancliff. I didn’t know that Norman Jowett had finished though.
I think Reliance joined RTS and Buckleys Tankers to be part of Linkman, who are I presume TDG. Norman Jowett who bought out Pendle Haulage finished about 3 years ago but kept the storage depot for another year, Normans son Micheal is a poorly man and I don’t know where Keith is. ( they are my cousins) I get Chrismas cards but no reply address. I will find out who is in Scholfields yard when I next pass. There was also Duckworths of Burnley and Fearings. Another tanker firm was Bulwark, Smith and Robbies changed hands many times and last I new were in the hands of Rentokil but I retired in 97 and some of the old lads from the 60’s were still with them , One I remember was 20 stone Dave, know as Scobby Breasley who at one time drove a F86 with the offside front mudguard rubbing on the wheel
When I was on contract to BP at Hull I had 5 nights out at Bury. 15 miles from home and one of Fearings lads was always picking me up. He made his bonus out of selling loose tea in platic bags, seems there was always a tea chest with a little hole in it, or so he said.

I worked for Bridges Parcels in 1960 when their depot was in Eldon St, Preston.(I think BRS parcels took them over)
Other companies that have gone bust.
Fred Davies, St Helens.
Northwest Freighters, Haydock, St Helens.
Cabmont, Erith & St Helens.
