Are you an ex Fred Davies man?, if you are you must of known Jim Roberts(Daygo) and Flax street in Salford, Jim was FD’s man down on in Liverpool, he knew everbody from Bootle to Garston on the Docks so when this baby driver had a problem down there it was Jim that sort it all out,

Got loads knocking about but this photo is of GTD 299B the driver is John Nowell(thats not him but me in the photo when I was twenty) and along with Brian Maloney(Brian later went on to work for Wynns ending up a driver there) and myself we transported this prop for the QE2 to the Clyde back in 68/69 not too sure, Walsh’s actually delivered three of the props for the QE2 the fourth one coming up from London(I think) the old girl had a 220 ■■■■■■■ with a Fuller box but originally being delivered with a ZF which later went into MTD 535G,
Absolutely superb pics, thank you!
Was the prop from SMM at Birkenhead? And am I right that John Nowell later worked for Bowker for a bit?
I doubt very much that John went working for ‘Billy Bowker full time( one of Walsh’s subbies )’. After ‘Joseph Clarence Walsh’ went ■■■■ up, I believe John went off to work for ‘Kay Goodfellow’, and at the end of the day he went into business in his own right., still someone had to pay for the Golf
The props did come out of Stone Mag at Birkenhead and I used to ■■■■ myself coming through the tunnel with John(he never hung about). One Saturday morning in particular we did a local 27’ 6’ wide prop down to west float out of Stone Mag, cutting a telephone pole in half on his side it was still my F------ fault, after working with a Taskmaster you end up one
Knew I had one somewhere…
nice looking erf there marky, the kv model aint it? look at the styling compared to todays slabs. i know theyre likely horrible to do the job in, but they do look a treat these old motors!

And who can fault the aesthetic beauty of the cardboard rad warmer .
Or those old haulage yards, ■■■■ the clogs right off your socks
Yes, nice one Marky.
Salut, David.
Marky,
I can tell you the history of that motor, 191HTB had but what else a 150 Gardner and the box had a DB two handled split change, the last decent driver on that vehicle was Stan Marsden. Stan was a master of our long gone craft and I drove that motor on many occasions in my teens coming over Woodhead when Stan kicked me behind the wheel, remember when you see any photos of Walsh’s they are more than likely on their third rebuild , where did you poach the photo from?. But what you are looking at there is ‘Walsh Transport services’ not Jos walsh, the name was changed to protect the innocent after the ministry moved in(enough said).
I honestly can’t remember where I found that picture. I was browsing through stuff on my PC and I found it in a thumbnail selection in a folder.
There are some more somewhere, including a rather sorry looking eight wheeler in the same yard when it became Walsh & Dearden…
Marky,
Being that you are a bit of an historian this might be of use to you.
Walsh&Dearden started scrapping lorries on the top of the tip which was Walsh’s yard after a days work in the garage, Brian Walsh(Joe Walsh’s son) and Frank Dearden was Walsh’s foreman mechanic. Talk about graft those two lads worked their balls off to make a very good business second if not better than Charltons from Farnworth, Frank is no longer with us but Brian Walsh is enjoying his well earned retirement by travelling the world.

Thanks for the information Taskman. I already knew the details you disclosed, but I’m sure it’ll have been welcomed by everyone else.
It’s all quiet up Bull Hill now as W&D are down in Sough Road, but if you’re after a caravan, it’s the place to go (or so I’m told)
Marky,
Here is another photo of a Walsh’s ERF, which is 846VTF the sister to 191HTB, here I’m loading an overhead crane girder for Irvine at John Englands, Ince . The trailer is a ‘Walsh’ built special and was just under fifty foot long with eleven hundred duals on the backend, happy days and cab happy then

I certainly was young man…1961 - 1970. I was second man to various drivers (I was second man to Kenny Ball until 3 weeks before him and Joe Pennington went into the ship canal at Warrington) Came onto days driving the dillies then at 21 the bigger stuff. I remember Jimmy Roberts (Jimmy Raffertys brother in law) before he was made up to the ‘runners’ job at the docks…him and Jack '■■■■ ‘um’ Birchall always moaning about each other who got the best jobs.
Really sorry about this Viking as that was obviously Jack
Birchalls ‘real’ name, but I have strict instructions not to let anyone mess with
the auto censor - David.
Viking,
Jim was alright till they sent him over to us to work in the traffic office after the ministry swooped on us he soon got ■■■■■■ off with the travelling each day so it was not long before Jim was back on his patch down the docks letting another daygoby
Oh dear Taskman, hear I go again, the auto censor is a very delicate flower and gets all upset if you try to fool it .- David.

Ah yes - I remember that sorry looking 8-legger: it belonged to one Harry Hamer of Farnworth, and who also had an ex-gritter. I took pics of both at Witton Park in 1984 and got talking to him.
I had a workshop manual for the gritter and he offered to exchange a decent chrome bumper that would have been destined for Bowker 47. I delivered the manual and he promised to have the bumper for the next day. The next day, Witton Park was empty, with not a showman to be seen!!
