Old Firms in Oxford Area

These are wartime Guy drays of Halls Brewery, note the hooded lamps, this was during the time of the “blackout”.

Who took Halls over? I know where their brewery was near the old jam factory and that their logo was the hare: Ive tried to acquire one when on pub demolition jobs…

Allsopps of Burton onTrent acquired Halls in 1925, in turn Ind Coope also of Burton On Trent merged with Allsopps in 1934 and went on to take over various other breweries finishing up as Allied Brewers.

I seem to have a vague recollection of this JAKEY, so what year would this have been and where was the warehouse, wouldn’t have been from Sandy lane would it?

Hi big g , I started in about 87 and was about 2 years after , they had a purpose w/h built and the night trunkers were in and out day and night from Leeds and they had about 10 or 12 drays based at Oxford depot , in fact its still there but sadley not used .I use to service the Cargos they were wrecked within a year :unamused: .

On the subject of Halls, a couple of people I spoke to have said Halls’ beer was as crap as Morrells…tin hat ready :stuck_out_tongue:  I did some muckaway from Morrells when Kingerlee converted the brewery into expensive flats; at a time when you could cross that millstream bridge near the infamous Park End club to get to it. Park End Club…now there’s somewhere (crap) I’ve been “adequately refreshed” There were these two nicely boobed students me and a mate got “talking to” once…very friendly they were :open_mouth:
Moving on (and around the corner) I took a lot of hogging ballast into a new student flat site opposite the old Cooper Callas building; it was on the site of the castle moat and silt going back hundreds of years had been dug out (including animal and human bones, bit of a landfill post civil war).

Come on Nathan, the water from round your way can’t make a decent pint, well your back teeth float before you are “■■■■■■■ !!! Now the water used to brew our Ale up here is like nectar,The alixr of life !!! and it’s cheaper!! Cheers hic ! hic! Dennis.

My ancestors on my mums’ side worked in the blanket mills around Witney; Mostly for James Marriott at Mount Mill (where Sainsburys now stands) but also for Earlys before and after the two companies merged in the ‘60s (they’d been related by marriage for years before)
I’ve found some transport/blanket related pics;

Earlys’ workers in Mill Street (the old A40)

William Payne horse and cart loading bales of blankets at Earlys for delivery to Witney Station (before BigGs time on the rails  )

More modern method of transport moving a new Earlys’ mill boiler from Witney Station

Believed to be the first motor vehicle to load at Earlys (Model T on old Oxon plates)

Juddian:
Well lads i’ve just gone through 44 pages and it’s been great, however i was actually looking for a certain company that i used to see regularly in the late 70’s and 80’s.
I’m from Northants and have no particular connection to the Oxfordhsire area apart from passing through but used to see their trucks regularly and they always looked well cared for.

Company was from Bicester and had a double barrelled name, their trucks were in battleship grey livery and they ran British trucks mainly motor panels cabbed stuff as i recall, Big J’s, Crusaders, Seddons and the like possibly.

I’ve been trying to recall this name for years and i just can’t, it’s surprised me that they haven’t come up in this superb thread…fippin eyes are worn out reading.

I’ve seen a good number of postings and pics from the Air Products poster…ADR or Chris…you wouldn’t happen to have an ex Newsfast Milton depot driver there would you, i used to night trunk for Newsfast Sywell Airport or Wellingborough depot around '86/87 to '91ish when we took redundancy (kerching), and i remember a couple of the lads from Milton as we used to meet up at Wapping at night, spending hours in the canteen and getting up to no good as often as not…

One of the lads was called Average and a real character and the other who’s name escapes me (terrible memory for names unless they owe me money) was a good bloke too who left around 88 to go to Air Products…he doesn’t owe me money or anything else to worry about by the way just wondering if the lads are still lurking about.
Ring any bells?

Hi Juddian, trying to think which of them came from Newsfast, a few have took redundancy/retired over the years! Do the names Dennis O’Regan, Lindsey Collins, John Collins, Ally Dewe ring any bells with you?
Regards Chris

Nice pics there Chris; Sad that Curtis are a shadow of what they used to be. Just like their great rival, Tuckwells who you’d think would do some joint venture between them. I remember when Curtis had 2 L reg Foden 3000s which for some reason only plated them at 30.400. Icouldnt believe it when I first loaded them and thought they carried 21t. Driver looked horrified and told me no just 19.5. You can sort’ve see why they’re only a shadow of themselves.

Our 3000 series were downrated as well Nathan, the gaffer didn’t think that it was worth paying extra road tax for just a ton extra payload.

Pete.
