Old Firms in Oxford Area

Juddian, the driver you were talking about ‘‘Average’’ used to work for Dave Teague from Didcot who had two trucks (290 F88’s) and a yard at the bottom of the high street near the railway bridge.
Muckaway, it’s nice to see Andrew has replaced that old Merc, I drove it for a few months while Pete was off when he failed his medical and had to pack in the ■■■■ and undergo a load of tests before they would pass him again. If you see him give him my regards and say I got to the states in the end.

JAKEY:

Nice pics, Chris: Ask Roger if he’s got any Smiths pics? Many have passed through his workshops over the years…

Hi Nathan, Roger is having a look at home for me over Xmas to see if he can find any more pics, he said he had loads but as no-one has asked to see them for years he can’t remember where they are? Thinking about it I think I have noticed one in his own office so will have a look next time I call round there, I gota run my horse in there next week cos she got an air leak from somewhere up under the front, bloody annoying cos I can hear it but can’t find it!

Hi ADR
I remember Nixeys, they used to run out of Tetsworth if my memory serves me right they had a lad driving for them who only had one hand
not sure if he used to be a fitter before becoming a driver

McKennas had a fitter with one hand; I was told he’d lost it working on a screener, rag around hand with belt running :open_mouth:

Hi Eddie (oily) Great pictures again mate, a rare sight to see a wagon at Carfax nowadays ay!

Didn’t work at Didcot, but had a short spell for Job’s, on a float out of Headington, many years ago. Nightmare of a job! they laced me up with almost two rounds rolled into one, starting at The Slade & Peat Moors, then off up to Horspath village. Sometimes, on a Friday & Saturday my batteries would go flat and I would have to wait for a tow back to depot. Then they gave me an old Trojan Diesel and all the folk at the start of the round complained about the noise at 5 o’clock in the morning. Didn’t have much of it, stayed 'til Christmas, for the tips, then jacked!
Something I never worked out, the company insisted it was pronounced Jobes and not Jobs, something to do with the apostrophe “S.” What did you know it as? or am I just thick!

Always known as ‘Jobes’ dairies in Reading.

Pete.

Does anyone know who did haulage for Earlys of Witney? I know British Rail and GWR did when the railway was running. I can vaguely remember seeing a pale blue 4w tipper used for collecting coal from Marriotts during the 80s when my gran lived on Moor Avenue: It was the smoke from Earlys chimney on cold mornings that got me into steam power.

Hi Muckaway

Hi George, The Trojan milk float you mention. I remember them, 4cly. 2 stroke, which was later dropped in favour of a 3cyl Perkins. They were known as Jobes around Oxford.
Happy days.

The guy in the photo is Steve■■? (I think) and if I.I.R.C. lost his right hand in a motorcycling accident on the way to Santa Pod.

He drives/drove using a nylon ball fixed to the steering wheel, and a device like an eggcup attatched to his false arm.
